Othello Jean Whetten

Othello Jean Whetten, 85, of Ammon, Idaho, a stroke victim for the last six years, passed away peacefully Monday, June 27, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his loving family members. He was under the care of his loving wife and OneSource Hospice. He was born June 9, 1931, in Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Clifford Leon Whetten and Annie Martineau Whetten. Jean graduated as Valedictorian from Juarez Stake Academy in May, 1949. In June of 1956, he graduated with a BA degree from Brigham Young University. He also attended the University of Arizona. He served as a Corporal in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. On June 1, 1955, he married Reta DeeAnne Clark in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. He retired from the LDS Church Finance Department after thirty-three years of service as an financial accountant in the areas of Colonia Juarez, Mexico City, and Salt Lake City, Utah. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, his church service included Scoutmaster, Ward and Stake Clerk, Stake Missionary, Counselor in the Stake Presidency, Counselor to two mission presidents, Bishop, Counselor in Temple Presidency, Temple Sealer and Recorder. He served four Spanish speaking missions with his wife, DeeAnne. Jean has lived in Colonia Chuichupa, Colonia Juarez, Mexico City, and Monterrey, Mexico; Provo, Salt Lake City, South Jordan, and Orem, Utah; as well as Stuttgart, Germany; Tucson, Arizona; El Paso, Texas; and Santiago, Chile.

He will also be remembered for his gift of creating limericks, reciting poetry, joyfull singing, playing the piano, and lovely dancing. Jean is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, DeeAnne Whetten of Ammon, ID; his ten children and their spouses, Jeana Diane Whetten of Jacksonville, FL, Clark Lionel (Corinne) Whetten of St. George, UT, Curtis Leon (Michelle) Whetten of Atlanta, GA, Julianne (Bruce) Williams of Goodyear, AZ, Lorena (Bruce) Holmstead of Middleton, ID, Cedric Lincoln Whetten of Atlanta, GA, Angelina (Rodney) Farnes of Ammon, ID, Conal Leonard (Monique) Whetten of El Paso, TX, Christopher Lane (Elena) Whetten of AZ, and Craig Loal (Jenette) Whetten of Rexburg, ID; 36 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Marzelle Brown, and three brothers, Clifton, Merrill, and Clair. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2016, at the Ammon LDS 2nd Ward, 1100 South Tiebreaker, Ammon, ID, 83406, with Bishop Lorin McArthur officiating. The family will visit with friends from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Friday at the church. Following the services Military Rites will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team and Idaho Honor Guard. Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 2, 2016, at the Charleston Cemetery in Charleston, Utah.
