O. V. HANDLY
IDAHO FALLS, ID -- O. V. (Oscar Vernon) Handly, 90, of
Idaho Falls, Idaho, died September 18, 2004, at Mt. Vernon Assisted Living.
He was born October 28, 1913, in Stanford, Montana, to
Joe Handly and Lucy Jane Anderson Handly. He had one sister, Lucy Jane.
He attended early school in Stanford, Montana, and graduated from high
school in Lewistown, Montana.
On June 10, 1936, he married Bernice Hanson in Driggs,
Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
They resided in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and then returned to ranching in
Montana for the early years of their marriage. They later moved to Idaho
Falls where he started his own land leveling and excavation business.
O. V. was an avid hunter and excellent sharpshooter.
He loved fishing and recreational boating. He was a skilled mechanic and
his interest in steam engines led to constructing models in later life.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, serving as Stake Young Men's President, Bishop, high councilman,
stake clerk and other positions. He was also active in the Boy Scouts
of America, participating in many activities.
His wife, Bernice, died in May, 1976. He married Zelda
L. (Sally) Stromberg Olsen in March, 1977. They were married for 25 years.
They resided in Reedsport, Oregon, and Mesa, Arizona. Sally died in June,
2001.
He is survived by his only sister, Lucy Jane Handly Gertiser
of Woodburn, Oregon, and six children: Robert (Cristel) Handly of Phoenix,
Arizona; Janet (Dennis) Westerberg, of Idaho Falls; Kathy (Chad) Rowe
of Merriam, Kansas; Marilyn (Tom) Larsen, of Bend, Oregon; Jack (Debbie)
Handly of Rigby, Idaho; and Julie (Andy) Dobson of Hamer, Idaho; three
stepchildren: Karl (Colleen) Olsen of Mesa, Arizona; Gary (Pat) Olsen
of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Mike (Sherry) Olsen of Bountiful, Utah; 29
grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
He was a compassionate and giving person, loving people
and caring for them. He leaves to his family and friends a legacy of love,
family traditions and rich memories. He will be sorely missed.
Services to be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September
24, 2004, at the Idaho Falls LDS Shadow Mountain Ward, 3721 Shadow Mountain
Trail, with John Strobel officiating. The family will receive friends
Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge, and from
Friday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Hillcrest
Cemetery in Shelley, Idaho.
