Opal Pearl Sheppard Hummel, 93, of Idaho Falls, passed away December 28, 2015, at Teton Post Acute Care & Rehabilitation.

Opal was born July 23, 1922, in Mountain Grove, Missouri, to William Monroe Sanders and Aurora Alice Haggard-Sanders. She grew up and attended schools in Mountain Grove and graduated from Mountain Grove High School.

Then off to California to be "Rosie the Riveter," next to Twin Falls to be a telephone operator.

She married Claude Nicholas "Shep" Sheppard April 1946. Shep passed away July 24, 1970. On January 15, 1971, she married William Blane Hummel in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He passed away April 26, 2015.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. You always knew what was on her mind. She enjoyed exploring remote mountain roads and recently took great pleasure from watching the birds and squirrels from her window.

Opal is survived by her son, Tom (Gail) Sheppard of Reno, NV; son, Ron (Laurette) Sheppard of Idaho Falls, ID; brother, Bob Sanders of Idaho Falls, ID; sister, Josephine Peterson of Elkhart, IN; 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, C. N. Sheppard; second husband, William Hummel; brother, Melvin Sanders; sisters, Jewell Sanders, Ruby Tabor, Pauline Molyneux, and Reola Vail.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 2, 2016, at Calvary Baptist Church, 785 East First Street, with Pastor Matt McGukin officiating. The family will visit with friends from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery.
