ONICE AKINS
IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Onice Ta Akins, 75, of Atomic City, died December 6, 2009, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center of cancer.
Onice was born September 9, 1934, in Leadhill, Arkansas, to Charles Thomas Akins and Francis May Snow Akins. The family moved to Washington in May of 1944, when Onice was 9 years old. He attended Titan Grade School and Cowiche High School.
Onice met his first wife, Mary Norton, in the Yakima Valley area. They had four children, Rocky, Rosemary, Reatha, and Clovis. After the birth of Clovis, Mary became ill and soon passed away. Tragedy struck again as Onice found himself burying his little baby girl, Clovis, also.
As time went on, he met and married Helen they had five children, Terry, Kenny, Glen, Travis, and Tommy Akins. During this time he lost his daughter, Rosemary, in a house fire. Later this union ended in divorce. He moved to Eastern Idaho in 1970. He worked as a cement finisher, oilfield roughneck, farmer, and industrial laborer.
After several years, he met Donna Mae Whiting and they married in September, 1976, in Elko, Nevada. They enjoyed winters in Arizona, panning for gold, traveling, fishing, camping, and looking for new adventures. After Donna passed away in April, 2006, Onice lived a quieter lifestyle, gardening, raising birds, chickens, quail and pheasants, playing checkers with his best friend, Don, and riding his four-wheeler, while enjoying the constant companionship of his loyal little dog, Skipper.
He was a member of the Pentecostal Church. Onice will be missed by many people; he was a friend to everyone that knew him.
