Norman Ross “Bud” Stanger, 85, of Iona, passed away August 26, 2015, at Mountain View Hospital in Idaho Falls. He was suffering from complications due to Hodgkins Lymphoma. Norman was born June 25, 1930, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Frank and Geneva Bybee Stanger. He grew up in Iona and graduated from Iona High School. He served as an LDS missionary for two years in the West Texas El Paso Mission. He also served his country in the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of Captain. Norm continued his education at Ricks College, University of Idaho, Brigham Young University and graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Secondary Education. On December 17, 1954, he married Joyce Jensen in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They raised their five children in the Taylor area south of Idaho Falls. Norm began his teaching career at Soda Springs Junior High. He taught for a brief time at O.E. Bell Junior High before transferring to Clair E. Gale, where he taught for 36 years. He taught for one year at Taylorview Junior High before retiring in 1992. After his retirement, he and Joyce bought a house and farm in the Rockford area west of Blackfoot. They lived there for eighteen years and loved the new friends they made. They moved to Iona in 2009. For most of his life, Norman was a cattle rancher and farmer. With the help of his four sons, he ran his cow-calf operation in Bone, Idaho, during the summers and at home in the valley during the winters. “Bud” was an avid horseman who continued to ride horses to the very end. He was one of the few genuine American cowboys. Norm was a devoted and loving husband. He cherished his family and considered them his greatest treasure. Survivors include his wife of 60 years: Joyce Stanger of Iona, ID Son: Jed (Lora) Stanger of Ammon, ID; Son: Brian Stanger of Iona, ID; Son: Brad (Barb Hutchens) Stanger of Idaho Falls, ID; Son: Scott (Rasheil) Stanger of Victor, ID; Daughter: Jennifer Stanger of Idaho Falls, ID; 10 grandchildren He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dick Stanger, Pete Stanger, and Bruce Stanger (infant); a sister, Kay Lott; brothers-in-law, Bruce Nielsen, Vernon Ricks, Rodger Cook and Richard Jensen; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Ricks. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 29, 2015, at the Iona LDS 5th Ward, 7555 North 55th East (Ririe Hwy & Iona Road), with Darrel Ker, formerly of the Iona 5th Ward bishopric, officiating. The family will visit with friends on Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Wood East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road, and from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Iona Cemetery.
