Norman Carl Hansen, 82, of Pocatello, former longtime resident of the Osgood / New Sweden area, passed away November 14, 2010, at Highland Hills Assisted Living Center in Pocatello of natural causes. He was surrounded by his loving wife and children and under the care of Creekside Hospice.
Norman was born December 30, 1927, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, the son of Farrel L. Hansen and Lily Wahlquist Hansen. He grew up in the Osgood area of Idaho Falls and attended Idaho Falls schools. He graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1945 and then studied agriculture and business at the University of Idaho.
Norman married his sweetheart, Phyllis Marjean "Clem" Davies, June 24, 1948, in Elko, Nevada. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Norman was a farmer for a good portion of his life with various farming operations, including: Hansen Farms, Westside Farms as well as owning and operating his own farm, all in Osgood, Idaho. He was the Secretary of the Idaho Potato Growers Association for many years and manager of potato processing plants in both Aberdeen, Idaho, and Kansas City, Missouri. He was also a field man for Simplot.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Norman served in many church callings, including three full-time missions with Clem in the California - Sacramento, Florida - Jacksonville, and Washington - Spokane Missions. He served as Bishop of the Osgood Ward, as well as many High Councilman positions, and devoted many years of service to the Boy Scouts of America. Norman and Clem also participated in the LDS Indian Placement Program, fostering four Indian children. He was one of the founders of the local vocational college (EITC). Norman was an avid inventor, coming up with many innovative ideas which are still in use today. While in Missouri, he designed and developed “Clementine Hills,” an upscale, thriving community. His love of family was paramount and foremost in his life.
Norman is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Clem, of Pocatello, a daughter, Susan Parkinson of Logan, UT; three sons, Doug (wife, Rita) Hansen of Hamilton, MO; Mike "Buck" (wife, Angel Sims) Hansen of Tetonia, ID; and Joe (wife, Marnee) Hansen of Kennewick, WA; two brothers, Orval (wife, June) Hansen of Arlington, VA and John D. (wife, Michele) Hansen, of Idaho Falls; 17 Grandchildren and 22 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, David, two brothers, Reed and Farrel, and a sister, Mary Freund.
There will be a private viewing for immediate family on Thursday, November 18, 2010, from 1 to 1:30 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge, then a public visitation from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Graveside Funeral Services and burial will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery, immediately following the visitation.
