Modine Smith

MODINE GWEN SHAFFER SMITH IDAHO FALLS, ID - Modine Gwen Smith, 89, of Idaho Falls, died July 3, 2003, at Syringa Homes in Idaho Falls. She was born March 3, 1914 in Lexington, Lee County, Texas, to Claude Shaffer and Robert Estelle Astin Shaffer. She grew up and attended schools in Lexington. She married John Thomas Smith, Jr. , of Brenham, on June 7, 1936 in Beeville, Texas. They lived and reared their family in Texas. After she was widowed, she spent the last five years of her life with her daughter in Idaho. She worked in retail most of her adult life until retiring from J. C. Penney Company as a department manager and a buyer for women's clothing. She enjoyed serving as a volunteer at Ward Memorial Hospital in Monahans, Texas, and also was very active and loved in the Senior Citizens Group in Monahans, Texas. She served as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher through the years. She also took part in the women's group in the local Methodist Church. Surviving are: Daughter-in-law: SueAnne Smith, Monahans, TX Daughter: Martha Oviatt, Shelley, ID Brother: Odine Glen Shaffer 5 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Ronald Shaffer Smith, 5 sisters and 3 brothers. A Memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m., July 5, 2003, at the Brenham Memorial Chapel in Brenham, Texas. Burial will be in Prairie Lee Cemetery under the direction of Brenham Memorial Chapel.
