Michelle Dione Cheney Nelson, 46, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away at home on July 1, 2026, surrounded by her devoted husband, beloved daughter, and identical twin sister, after a courageous battle with cancer that lasted more than eight years.
Born on August 26, 1979, in Simi Valley, California, Michelle was the cherished daughter of Gary Owen Cheney and Sherrie Ann Perkins Cheney. She graduated from Royal High School in 1998, and later continued her education in early childhood education and psychology, pursuing the work that would become so closely tied to her gentle and nurturing spirit.
On April 8, 2006, Michelle was married and sealed for time and all eternity to Gerald Hunter Nelson. Together they built a life centered on faith, love, and family. She is survived by her husband, Gerald Hunter Nelson; her daughter, Audrey Amanda Nelson; her parents, Gary Owen Cheney and Sherrie Ann (Perkins) Cheney; and her siblings, Dustin Cheney (Erika Grimnes), Douglas Cheney (Marianne Meline), and Amanda Cheney (Scott) Cardwell.
Michelle spent several years as a preschool teacher before moving to Idaho, where she continued to share her gifts with children and eventually became a kindergarten teacher at Koala Kids Academy. She had a special ability to make children feel safe, seen, loved, and heard, and she found deep joy in helping them learn and grow.
She was known for her tender heart and quiet acts of kindness. Michelle held a deep love and respect for military service members and other uniformed heroes; she always thanked them for their service and often paid for their meals as a small expression of her gratitude. She also loved long scenic drives and especially treasured the time she spent with her family.
A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Michelle lived with compassion, conviction, and enduring devotion to those she loved. Her life was marked by service, warmth, and a sincere desire to lift others.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 10, 2026, at the Idaho Falls Templeview Ward, 1450 Mountain View Lane in Idaho Falls. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will take place at a later date.
