Michael Thompson

Michael Lee Thompson, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, peacefully passed away January 8, 2011, after a two-year battle with cancer. At the time of his passing he was at 64 years old and was surrounded by family in the comforts of his own home. Mike was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and faithfully served others in various callings throughout his life, including service in several bishoprics, on the stake high council, and as a stake financial clerk. He took great pride in his 20+ years of dedicated service to the Boy Scouts of America. Mike was born June 10, 1947, in Rupert, Idaho, to Lawrence C. Thompson and Fern Beatrice Christopherson Thompson. He grew up in Declo, Idaho, enjoying farm life with simple pleasures such as swimming in the local canal, jumping out of a barn, or riding his horse, Duke. He participated in scouting and enjoyed scouting activities. He graduated from Declo High School, playing football, running track, and also playing church softball. Afterwards, Mike attended Ricks College on a football scholarship and then served a two-year mission in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Upon returning from his mission, he attended Brigham Young University, where he met his eternal companion, Nadine Hart. Mike and Nadine were married in the Oakland, California, LDS Temple December 30, 1972. He graduated from Brigham Young University in August of 1973. Mike had different careers over the years, at Fred & Wayne’s Tire Center, Safeco Insurance Company, and Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, working as a claims adjuster, manager, and auditor, covering the states of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Utah. He traveled frequently while working and had a passion for viewing beautiful outdoor scenery and wild animals. Despite his many commitments, Mike’s family and friends were the most important things in his life. His quick wit and sense of humor made him a favorite among many. He constantly made others smile and laugh. He also had a way of showing unconditional love that made all around him feel highly valued. He was always approachable and would drop anything, anywhere, to help a family member or friend. He constantly served others and took little time for himself. Survivors include his wife, Nadine Hart Thompson, and his four children: Kristen (Paul) Hansen of Blackfoot, ID; Jonathan (Nara) Thompson of Denver, CO; Timothy (Jennifer) Thompson of Ammon, ID; and Emily (Brenden) Andrews of Ammon, ID. He was blessed with 12 grandchildren, with twins coming in May. He is also survived by three brothers, William (Marti) of Westminster, CO; Kenneth (Helen) of Pocatello, ID; and Gail (Carrie) of Declo, ID. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Thompson, his mother, Fern Christopherson Thompson, and his brother, Robert Thompson.
