MELVIN J. PEARCE
IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Melvin Joseph Pearce, 87, of Ocala, Florida, and formerly of Idaho Falls, died September 30, 2002, at the Oakhurst Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Ocala of natural causes.
He was born October 25, 1914, at Parker, Idaho, to Thomas Joseph Pearce, Jr. and Harriet Amanda Loveland Pearce. The family moved to Iona when he was small and he grew up and attended schools there. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II.
He married Kathleen Mavourneen Wilson July 23, 1938, in Milo, Idaho. They divorced in 1959. They made their home in Idaho Falls, where he farmed with his brother-in-law, then worked in Montana during the summers and at the sugar factory in Lincoln during the winters. He drove truck for many years for Orange Transportation and PIE. He married Lucy Hooker Johnson July 22, 1960, at Idaho Falls. Lucy passed away January 1, 1999. After Lucy’s death he moved to Salem, Massachusetts to be near his son, and then to Ocala earlier this year.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in various capacities over the years, including MIA Secretary and counselor in the Sunday School Presidency. He and Lucy served a full-time mission to Calgary, Canada in the late 1970's. He enjoyed square dancing, playing cards and games, and travel. He also enjoyed gardening and yard work.
Surviving are:Son: Melvin Lamar [Carol] Pearce, Ocala, FLSon: Thomas Gene [Christina] Pearce, Idaho FallsBrother: Everett [Betty] Pearce, San Leandro, CASister: Lorna [Lou] Meppen, Idaho FallsSister: Lela Loveridge, Idaho FallsSister: Dorothy Prestwich, Lincoln 1 Grandson, Brandon (Jessica) Pearce.He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lucy, a son, James Clifton Pearce, an infant son, two sisters, Elma Gray and Veda Nelson, and a brother, Vernon Pearce.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 5, 2002, at the Wood Chapel of the Pines, 273 North Ridge, with Kevin Day of the Idaho Falls LDS 24th Ward Bishopric officiating. The family will visit with friends for one hour prior to the services at Wood Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Kidney Fund, in the name of Melvin Pearce, 6110 Executive Blvd., Ste. 1010, Rockville, MD 20852.
Burial will be in the Iona Cemetery under the direction of Wood Funeral Home.
Military Rites will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Team.
Mel was my uncle as he was married for so many years to my Aunt Lucy. We all miss them both. I'm grateful this service is available as I'm in CA and can't be there.

I am a granddaughter of Lucy and just wanted to thank you for sharing Mel with our family. He was a wonderful grandfather to me. May God be with you always.
