Melva J. Powell, 86, passed away March 25, 2012 as a result of health complications relating to age. She was born April 5, 1925 to Raymond R. Jones and Elsie Wassmer Jones in Magna, Utah. They later moved to West Jordan, Utah. Melva married Keith L. Powell on November 6, 1942 and were later sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on October 10, 1968. Melva assisted Keith with the various tasks involved in working their forty acre farm in South Jordan, Utah. Melva’s children were of paramount importance to her. As her children matured Melva worked for the local school district, H & R Block during tax season, and retail department stores. Melva was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served in many capacities in the church, including Relief Society President, Young Women’s President, homemaking leader, and various teaching positions. Melva enjoyed participating in athletic activities throughout her life and especially enjoyed golfing at Star Valley Ranch in Wyoming where she and Keith spent summers at their cabin. She enjoyed the company and companionship of her family and in her later years took great pleasure in providing treats to her great grandchildren when they visited her. Melva will be greatly missed by her family. Melva is survived by her children: Daughter: Sherrie (Gail) Rosenkrantz of St. George, UT; Son: Brent (Kathy) Powell of South Jordan, UT; Son: Don (Judy) Powell of St. George, UT; Daughter: Janet (Marvin) Smith of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Sister: LaVerla Bateman; Brother: Merlin Jones; Brother: LaMar Jones; Sixteen grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Keith L. Powell. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at Wood Funeral (273 N. Ridge). The family will visit with friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Tonaquint Cemetery, St. George, Utah at 1:00 p.m. Friday March 30, 2012 under the direction of Wood Funeral Home.
