Melanie Murdock Norrell

Melanie Murdock Norrell, 56, passed away unexpectedly in her sleep of natural causes on October 23, 2026, at her home in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Melanie, the third child of Connie Shurtliff Murdock and Frank James Murdock was born on June 23, 1970 in Boise, Idaho. From the very beginning, her outgoing, adventurous, and vivacious personality was unmistakable. She had a zest for life, a love for people, and an enthusiasm for the world around her that would define the way she lived.

Melanie embraced life wholeheartedly, guided by her passions for family, friends, travel, animals, good food, and God's beautiful creations. She found joy in life's adventures, both big and small, and had a special appreciation for everything kind and beautiful. To know Melanie was to know someone who loved deeply, lived fully, and found happiness in the experiences and relationships that made life meaningful.

Melanie attended Falls Valley Elementary School and Bonneville Junior High School before graduating from Bonneville High School in 1988. She continued her education at Ricks College, participated in the BYU London Study Abroad program, and later attended the University of Utah.

Following her schooling, Melanie set out to discover and pursue the things she loved most. Her adventurous spirit drew her to the mountains, where she spent winters seeking out the best ski slopes and summers exploring breathtaking landscapes, hiking trails, and mountain lakes. Her appreciation for the beauty of nature inspired a passion for photography of the remarkable places and moments she experienced.

Her love of people, travel, and adventure also led her to become a flight attendant, giving her the opportunity to explore the world, experience different cultures, savor new foods, and meet people from all walks of life. Melanie had a genuine curiosity about the world and a gift for finding joy wherever her travels took her.

Melanie also had a tender heart for animals and was a devoted animal lover throughout her life. She held a particularly special place in her heart for her beloved dogs, who were much more than pets to her—they were cherished companions and members of her family. Her affection for animals reflected the warmth, kindness, and compassion she so freely shared.

Melanie eventually found her professional calling in the hospitality industry. What began as a front desk position at the Holiday Inn Express on Channing Way grew into a rewarding career in hotel management. Through her dedication, leadership, and natural ability to connect with people, she advanced to become General Manager. She later served as General Manager of the new Holiday Inn & Suites at Jackson Hole Junction.

Throughout her years with Inntrusted, Melanie developed lasting friendships with her colleagues and embraced opportunities to learn, grow, and take on new challenges. She deeply valued the people she worked alongside and considered them an extension of her family. Her work family held an equally special place in their hearts for her.

Melanie's love for the outdoors was boundless. She especially loved skiing the powder-covered slopes of Grand Targhee in Wyoming, a place that held deep meaning in her life. It was there, atop Fred's Mountain, that she married Greg Norrell, the love of her life. Their shared journey was filled with love, companionship, and adventure.

Melanie leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, friendship, and a life filled with experiences. She will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, her vibrant personality, her love of family and friends, and her remarkable ability to find beauty and joy in the world around her. Though her time with us ended far too soon, the memories she created and the love she shared will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Melanie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gregory Norrell; her father, Frank James Murdock; her twin brothers, Daren and Ryan Murdock; and her nephew, Spencer Manwaring.

She is survived by her stepchildren, Catherine Brandon (Lee) and Michael Norrell (Maritza); six grandchildren; her loving mother, Connie Shurtliff Murdock; and her devoted siblings, Todd Murdock (Kimberly), Chad Murdock (Lesa), Dan Murdock (Brittney), and Kaylin Manwaring (Benjamin). She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Dottie (Daren) Murdock and Brenda (Ryan) Murdock; 30 nieces and nephews; and 15 great-nieces and great-nephews.
