Maurice Heninger

DR. MAURICE K. HENINGER Dr. Maurice King Heninger, Idaho Falls' first Radiologist dies at age 90 On Friday May 30, 2008, at 4:55 p.m., Dr. Heninger passed peacefully at the home of Brad and Barbara (daughter) Carlson in Ucon, Idaho, of causes incident to age. Maurice was born in Raymond, Alberta, Canada, on December 16, 1917, to Wilford Abijah and Mabel King Heninger. His early childhood consisted of life lessons learned on the farm in Canada where faith, family and hard work helped shape his character. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Eastern Canada after which he attended BYU. He was fortunate to meet and later marry Vera Holbrook of Provo, Utah, on June 5, 1941, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. He and Vera moved to Montreal, Canada, where he attended medical school at McGill University and their oldest daughter, Susan, was born. Upon graduation, he served as Captain and medical officer in the Canadian army at a German prisoner of war camp outside Edmonton near the end of World War II. The new Dr. and his small family then decided to move to Vancouver, British Columbia, to further his medical education in the specialty of radiology. Launa joined the family while in Vancouver, then the decision was made to settle somewhere between Provo and Raymond. That place turned out to be Idaho Falls, in July of 1950, where Becky, Steve, Barbara and David were born. Idaho Falls provided the ideal atmosphere to raise children and to offer his much needed medical expertise. He served the people of Idaho Falls for nearly 35 years in a number of professional and civic capacities and received many accolades. He also served in many church positions and was a sought after teacher and lecturer. He and Vera made a number of lifelong friends while in Idaho Falls, and called the area home until shortly after his retirement in 1985, when they moved to Provo. Maurice loved books and the pursuit of knowledge and spent a lifetime learning. He particularly loved history. Stories of great men and great adventures inspired him. He loved the arts and classical music. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and vacationing, all with his family. He loved spending time on his farm outside Idaho Falls, where he taught his children to care for horses and livestock and to learn to work. Hard physical work kept him strong and connected to the land. Those who knew him appreciated his reservoir of knowledge, integrity, wisdom, good humor and wit, and his deep and abiding faith. Survivors include five children; Launa Nelson of Gilbert, AZ, Rebecca (Gary) Jewkes of Brooks, GA, Steven (Melanie) Heninger of Boise, ID, Barbara (Bradley) Carlson of Ucon, ID, and David (Kathy) Heninger of Idaho Falls, ID, two sisters, Louiene Brammer of Provo, UT and Bernice Blackham of McGill, NV, and one brother, Richard Heninger of Provo UT, 32 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Holbrook Heninger, a daughter, Susan Heninger, a sister, Mary Schumers, two brothers, Bryant and Mark Heninger, one grandchild and one great- grandchild. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2008, at the Ucon LDS Ward, 10854 North 41 East, with Bishop Brad Carlson officiating. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge, and Friday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Burial Services will be held at 12 Noon Saturday, June 7, 2008, at the Provo City Cemetery in Provo, Utah, under the direction of Wood Funeral Home. ------------------------------------ Condolences received online: Anthony Lowry and Family ablowry@shaw.ca Dearest Family Members; It's with mixed emotions to learn of my great Uncle Maurice's passing. He was an enormous influence on my life, especially after the passing of Grandfather Bryant. He was a great ambassador of the large Heninger clan. How we enjoyed his many visits to Raymond. My young children still remember his visits!! He served so well and was a great man. He will leave a void that no doubt will be filled by his posterity. We are so happy he is reunited with his eternal companion, Vera, and his brothers, sister, and daughter. I regret we will not be able to be there to celebrate his life, but know we are with you in spirit here in Alberta, Canada. Farewell Uncle Maurice, job WELL DONE!! Anthony, Heather, Austin, Christian and Jocelyn Lowry of Calgary, Alberta Don & Mary Heninger yukkakat@yahoo.com "Uncle Maurice" was my favorite uncle for many, many years. I always looked up to him and really enjoyed his trips to Raymond in my younger years. His own family was very blessed. Don Carl Staley Dr. Heneger and I worked together at x-ray at Bingham Memorial Hospital for many years. He was a great man and a great radiologist. We had many great times together and many great days working together. I respected him very much. I am sorry he is gone. We should all be proud of him as I am. I’m sorry I can’t be at his funeral, but my heart is with you all. Carl Staley John Brammer Family brammerfam@hotmail.com Launa, Becky, Steve, Barb and Dave, Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. It is very easy to remember Maurice with a smile. Visits to both Raymond and Idaho Falls, trips to the Cabin, in later years at Provo, watching Maurice govern from his recliner (or is that Joe?), that booming voice and hearty laugh. Always inquiring about how everyone was doing. Families are forever. It's great that Maurice can be with Vera and Susan now. We love you. Linda Hall Tollestrup lindatollestrup@yahoo.ca I am the eldest daughter of Grant and Lois Hall. We all send our love to your family. We have many treasured and cherished memories of the Heninger gang and loved Uncle Maurice and Aunt Vera so very much. God bless all of you as you celebrate this noble patriarch's life. April Ellsworth Cooper aellscoop@hotmail.com I loved your Dad. He was the gospel doctrine teacher in our ward as we were a young married couple with our oldest child. Both your mom and dad were so warm and welcoming to us. I loved his doctrine class even though my baby didn't. Maurice always kissed my hand every Sunday. Sorry to see him go but happy to know that he is with Vera. Our heart felt condolences to you all. Margaret Brammer Reeves meg.reeves@verizon.net To my cousins, What a legacy Maurice has left. I was so touched reading all the comments. As one of the youngest grandkids of Mabel and Wilfred, I didn't spend as much time with Maurice or in Canada as my siblings. However, he was special to me for many reasons but especially the following... being a city girl from California, I always longed for a horse and cabin like I got to experience in Idaho Falls in the summers. Since a horse was just not going to happen, Uncle Maurice told me I could have one of his horses and it would be mine to ride and take care of whenever I came to Idaho. He gave me Frolic. If any of you remember Frolic, she/he had a wicked trot that left me with a sore back after a day of riding. But she was mine and true to his word, she was always there for me when I came to the cabin. Although I haven't been to the cabin since I was a child, I have my own cabin now with a picture of the Heninger cabin hanging up in my bedroom. Every time I look at it, I think of the good times I had with family there. I am especially thankful to Maurice and Vera for being so good to my mom in Montreal and then later after her heart surgery. He will be missed. My condolences to all of you. Margaret Brammer Reeves Claudia Smith King To all of the Heninger Family from one who considers you all dear, dear friends. As a child, I thought "Doc" was my uncle. I have loved him my whole life. I have loved the association I have had with the family at the cabin in Island Park, on the horses, at Study Group parties, art lessons, dates between the Smith and Heninger clan (see, we always wanted to be related!), Lake Powell, water skiing, and many more. I will always be indebted to you, Steve, for your part in looking for Llewellyn and what that entailed, and to your Dad for speaking so eloquently my feelings at Llewellyn's funeral. I have no doubt but that Llewellyn may have been privileged to meet your wonderful Dad after his passing. He loved him so. We are sad that our parents are on a cruise and will not even hear of Doc's passing until it is too late to take part in the services. They will be heart sick. We have chosen not to tell them until they return. I can imagine a very happy reunion for your folks but know that you will miss him here so much. We pray for your comfort. Love, Claudia Sonja Schanz sonjaschanz@msn.com I have so many happy memories of time I spent in the Heninger home growing up. Your dad was a great example of a stalwart father and man. I admired him for his devotion to his family, church, friends, and community. He knew how to work hard, but he also knew how to enjoy life and his family. He fought a good fight and had the love of his family and friends. He will be missed. Love, Sonja Collette Schanz Tammy Field fieta@ida.net I had the privilege of working with Dr.H at Riverview Hospital back in 1981-1984 as an X Ray Tech. He demanded perfection on sometimes less that perfect patients, but he made me strive to be the best X Ray Tech I could be. Dr. H could be kind of scary at times, but the things I learned from him has made me to be the person I am today. I am sorry for your loss, but I hope you know he touched a lot of lives. Thanks for sharing your dad with the community. Tammy Dane Watkins thewatkinsco@cs.com I wanted to send my condolences on the recent passing of your loved one, Maurice Heninger. He will be missed by all who knew him. He was a great person and his outstanding accomplishments will always be remembered by our community. Sherry and I want you to know that our prayers are with your family. Sincerely, Dane Watkins
