Matthew Furniss

Matthew Ted "Matt" Furniss, 53, passed away August 27, 2016, at his home in Idaho Falls, surrounded by his family, after a difficult battle with a rare neuroendocrine carcinoma. Matt was born August 31, 1962, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and was immediately adopted by Ted and Dorothy Furniss of Rigby, Idaho. Matt attended school at Midway, Rigby, Skyline, and Eastern Idaho Vo-Tech. Over the years, he worked for numerous, different construction companies. Twenty-five years ago, in 1991, he started his own concrete contracting company, Heavy Concrete. Matt was a workaholic, and work was very important to him, it always came first; his top priority was to always take care of his family. He always made time for his family; camping, trips to Las Vegas, or just dinner and a movie at home. Matt loved sports, all sports; football, NASCAR, hockey, baseball, basketball, and if there was a competition of any kind, he was watching. He also loved poker; playing with friends, a tournament in Las Vegas or Jackpot, or just playing on his iPhone app. His biggest passion in life was snowmobiling. He always had the winter months off work, and something about heading up the mountain with his buddies gave him great peace. Matt was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, and had been in recovery for 25 years. He loved sharing his experience, strength, and hope with others, and would do anything he could to show people his way of living. He was the type of person who would give anyone the shirt off his back, or the last dollar in his pocket, if he knew it would help them to find a better way of life. He always had a way of finding something positive in everything he did, and always had to crack a joke at the most inappropriate times, usually, at the expense of the other person, and people loved that about him, and his incredible sense of humor. Matt is survived by his wife, Martie (Jaynes) Furniss; children: Logan Titus Furniss (Brandy), Thea Jayne Furniss; stepdaughters: Mikaela Jayne deVisser, Kathy Brown, Lisa Brown; former wife, Darlean Clinger Packer; mother, Dorothy Ellis Furniss; and siblings: Thomas Furniss, Lorraine Norris, Travis Furniss, and Shauna Furniss. He was preceded in death by his father, Ted C. Furniss. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Friday, September 2, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Watersprings Church, 4250 South 25th East, with Pastor Gordon Boyle officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m, Thursday and for one hour prior to the services Friday, both visitations at the church. Burial will take place at Taylor Cemetery following the services.
