MARY SUE MOUSSEAU
IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Mary Sue Mousseau, 64, passed away February 23, 2002, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls. Sue was the loving wife of David Russell Mousseau and beloved mother of Jeffrey (AJ), Janell, and Jack (Louise) Mousseau. She is survived by her husband and children, her mother, Grace Taylor McCone, brothers Gordon (Norma) and George (Laurie) McCone and grandchildren Jennifer and Anne Mousseau and Camille and Spencer Mousseau. She was preceded in death by her father, Dwight "Mike" McCone and sister, Georgie McCone.
Sue was born on January 29, 1938, in Mandan, North Dakota. In 1958 she and David married and moved to Idaho Falls, where they have lived ever since. In 1971 she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Idaho State University with a Bachelors of Arts degree with a major in English education and a minor in mathematics. Upon graduation, Sue taught English at Skyline High School for twenty-two years and beginning in 1976, she served as chair of the Skyline English department. In 1981 the students of Skyline High School voted Sue Teacher of the Year. Additionally, in 1984 Sue was selected as School District 91 Teacher of the Year and in 1984-85 was runner up for the State of Idaho's Teacher of the Year. In 1990, the State of Idaho Centennial Commission named her one of the one hundred most influential people in the history of Idaho.
Sue was a strong advocate of public education and worked tirelessly to improve the quality of educational standards for the State of Idaho. Sue was active in both the Idaho and Idaho Falls Education Associations throughout her teaching career. In 1982/1983 she served as president of the IFEA, and from 1984 to 1991 Sue was a member of the Idaho Professional Standards Commission, sitting as chair for the latter four years of her service. In 1993 she was nominated for a seat on the Idaho State Board of Education but withdrew her nomination due to ill health.
In 1993 Sue retired from teaching. She and Dave built a mountain home in the Leigh Creek area just east of Tetonia, Idaho. Sue loved spending time there and became an avid bird watcher who could identify native birds by sight and sound. Her retirement years were also spent enjoying time with her family and friends, traveling throughout Idaho and reading. Shortly before her death, Sue began to learn Spanish and enjoyed practicing her conversational skills with Spanish speaking friends.
Sue Mousseau was an exceptional wife, mother, daughter and friend. She will be remembered for her incredible love of teaching, devotion to her students and for her outgoing personality. She will be missed by all.
Friends and family are invited to attend a viewing and visitation on Tuesday, February 26, 2002, between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home in Idaho Falls, also an hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. A funeral service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Idaho Falls, 237 North Water Avenue, Wednesday, February 27, 2002, commencing at 11:00 a.m. A private burial will follow at the Cache-Clawson Cemetery in Tetonia. If desired, donations in Sue's honor may be made to the Turtle and Crane Assisted Living Facility in Idaho Falls.
