Mary F. Lydon Guheen (1914-2018)

Our mother Mary Florence Lydon Guheen passed away peacefully at the age of 104 on Monday, November 19, 2018 at her daughter Judith’s home in Victor, Idaho. She was born in San Mateo, California on August 25, 1914 to Edward C. and Marie A. Lydon. She grew up at the Beresford Country Club (now the Peninsula Golf and Country Club) where her father was the original landscape architect and the General Manager for many years. She attended Dominican College in San Rafael and graduated from Stanford University in 1936. She married William M. Guheen of San Francisco and Idaho in 1939, son of Elise Guheen and John. J. Guheen, a former Attorney General of Idaho.. He preceded her in death in 1970. She studied economics and loved history, and she passed these interests on to the fifth-grade students she taught for many years in the Sacramento area. Her children recall visitors to their home they did not know—many of her students looked Mrs. Guheen up later in their lives to tell her she was one of their favorite teachers. She loved reading the Wall Street Journal, swimming, hiking, and weekly bridge games. When she was 62 she climbed the Grand Teton in Wyoming in honor of her oldest child and daughter Mary Barbara McBride who had died in 1973 in an automobile accident in Jackson, Wyoming. After retiring from teaching she worked twenty summer seasons at Jackson Lake Lodge where her genuine passion for Native American art and artifacts in the lodge gift shop made her a favorite of many visitors. On her days off she especially loved walking around Jenny Lake. She is survived by her six children: Margaret Guheen Anderson (Victor, ID), Nancy Guheen Gervais (Lampasas, Texas), William M. Guheen, Jr. (Janet, Wilson, WY), Elizabeth M. Guheen (Martinsdale, MT), Judith K. Guheen (Victor, ID), and Thomas E. Guheen (Alethea, Victor, ID), her grandson William Guheen III (Kalia), great grand-daughter Tegan, and her devoted caregiver for many years, Kim Olsen of Victor; numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her grandson Simon T. Gervais, sons-in-law, Alfredo C. Anderson, Robert Gervais and Robert McBride, her parents Edward C. and Marie Lydon, sister Kathleen Lydon, and her brothers Robert, Theodore, Richard and Edward. A devout Catholic, funeral services will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, California on Thursday, November 29, 2018, where she will be interred next to her husband. Arrangements are under the care of Wood Funeral Home in Idaho Fall, ID and Duggan’s Serra Mortuary in Daly City, CA.
