PORT PORTMANN
6/26/24 - 7/28/09
IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Martin Ernest Portmann (Port), died peacefully in his sleep at 85 years of age on July 28th, 2009, under the caring staff at the Idaho Falls Care and Rehabilitation Center.
Port was born June 26, 1924, in St. Louis Missouri, to Sylvia and Anthony Portmann. He lived a full and active life as a Montana rancher and state stock inspector in the summer months and in the winter Port was a civil engineer for the BLM in Idaho Falls. He also worked had for the City of Idaho Falls and was a licensed surveyor in both Montana and Idaho. He served our country as a proud member of the Navy and was a Mason.
Port married Helen (Ocile) Norman in 1950 and homesteaded the Diamond P Ranch, in West Yellowstone Montana in 1953. They spent winters working in Idaho Falls, ID, and would spend the summer and fall on the Diamond P working the saddle horse ranch business, raising Angus cows and enjoying hunting for deer, elk, antelope and moose.
Port is survived by his adopted daughter, Toni Portmann, and his adopted son, Rex Portmann, with eight wonderful grand-children: Keaton Johnson, Todd Spurr, Shawn Spurr, Keri Spurr, Dustin Portmann, Aaron Portmann, Kalli Hughes, Blake Portmann and seven great-grandchildren.
Port is now in heaven with his beloved Ocile and his grandson Tyson, as well as his loyal horses, Buck and Snip, and dog, Pal. We learned the true meaning of hard work, the importance of integrity and the power of a handshake from Martin "Port" Portmann.
Memorial Services will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2009, at the Diamond P Ranch in West Yellowstone, Montana.

Thank you for Port’s obituary. I will include it in the West Yellowstone News.
Please convey my condolences to his family. I knew Port and Ocile since I was a child coming every summer
to ride horses at the Diamond P. It was always a great adventure.

Dear Rex and family,
We are so sorry for the loss of your father. My Father passed away in June and he was 85 also. It's a hard thing to go through but the love and support of family and friends will be a comfort for you. Also the knowledge that he is with his loved ones now and we will be with them again is what gets us through the hard days to come. May the Lord bless and comfort you and your family at this time of sorrow.
Love, Becky and family

Port was a coworker, a good friend, a hunting companion and will be missed by our family. Many pleasant memories of our times together.
We hope to attend the memorial on Sept. 26 at the Portmann Ranch.

I met "Port" some 44 years ago when I was dating his neighbor Annette Fluke, daughter of Willis N. Fluke. He always seemed to embody the image of the true American rancher and a good neighbor. While I didn't see him often, I did enjoy those moments that we shared over the years.
Thank you Port for serving our country during its time of need. Your sacrifices during WWII are greatly appreciated.
I extend my sympathies to the family he leaves behind. The world has lost a good man.

Hi Toni & Rex.
So sorry to hear about your Dad passing. My folks sent me the card from the memorial service & the photo of your Dad was just as I remember him. Some of my favorite memories were of all of us as kids at the ranch in the summer. Your Dad was a BIG, memorable presence in my youth & the memories are all good. Sorry I couldn't attend the memorial service & see you both in person. Glad to know the ol' Diamond P Ranch is still going strong.
Mu condolences on your loss & best wishes for your future.
