Marlene Thueson Burtenshaw, 90, of St. George, Utah, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family on October 10, 2023. Marlene was born September 7, 1933, in Sugar City, Idaho, to DeLamar Thueson and Rubie Rachel Casper Thueson. She was the first of five children. Marlene was a beautiful blonde, brown-eyed girl. She was raised in tough times on a farm, milking cows and working on the farm in any way she could to help support her family. Her hard work at an early age developed an unbelievable work ethic that she encouraged in others. Marlene attended school in Rigby, Idaho, and graduated in 1952. Upon graduation, she promptly went to work for the telephone company as a switchboard operator. She was very dedicated to her job and worked hard to save money for her future endeavors.
In April of 1955, she was married to the love of her life, William A. Burtenshaw, by her uncle in his new home, and then went on honeymoon to Sun Valley, Idaho. The happy couple moved to Mud Lake, Idaho, in 1955 to start their life together on a 360-acre property that they developed to raise hay and cattle. A few years later, they welcomed their first son, Alan, to their family. They later moved to Iona where they welcomed three more beautiful children to the family, a son, Ben, daughter, Deb, and a son, Craig. Then they relocated to Osgood, Idaho, and their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple. It was then that they were blessed with one more son, Jeff. Their family of five was now complete. Finally, they settled in St. George, Utah, to enjoy the sunshine and welcome friends and family into their warm home. Bill and Marlene were married 68 years. They had many adventures raising their family, enjoying retirement, and spending warm winters in Arizona with friends and family.
Marlene was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in many callings in the church, including Relief Society, Primary music teacher, the church choir, and served a mission in the Idaho Falls Visitor Center. She was always busy taking care of her family and took pride in her job positions at Idaho Fall School District 91. Marlene was a natural at teaching and encouraging others to excel. She was creative and gifted when it came to arts and crafts. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, embroidering, gardening, and last, but not least, fishing. She was always supportive and involved in her children’s activities. You could always hear her cheering in the crowd.
Marlene is survived by her husband, William A Burtenshaw of St. George, UT; sister, Velma Jenkins of Challis, ID; son, Alan (Amy) Burtenshaw of Gilbert AZ; son, Ben Burtenshaw of Safford, AZ; daughter, Deborah (Alvin) Allen of McCammon, ID; son, Craig (Shawna) Burtenshaw of Mackay, ID; and son, Jeff (Holly) Burtenshaw of Herriman, UT.
