MARION D. SMITH
IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Marion Luyster DeVoe Smith, 89, of Idaho Falls, died April 24, 2006, at her home in Idaho Falls Good Samaritan Center.
She was born October 27, 1916, in Baldwin, Long Island, New York to William Franklin DeVoe and Marion Luyster DeVoe. She grew up and attended school in Baldwin. Following her high school graduation, she attended Ithaca and Hofstra Colleges and New York University, completing her masters degree in physical education. She received her teacher’s certificate and fulfilled her dream of a career teaching physical education in the Long Island school system.
On July 9, 1949, she married Cecil Raymond Smith, Jr. in Baldwin, New York. They moved to Redding, California, where she was a mother and a homemaker. She was divorced after several years, and returned with her son to Baldwin. She resumed her career as a teacher, retiring in 1976. She moved to Idaho Falls in 1999 to be closer to family residing at Lincoln Court and Good Samaritan Center.
She attended the Episcopal Church. She loved golfing and spending time with her sister and friends. Marion was a long time member of Long Island’s Meroke Golf Association and Green Fields Golf Club where she served in many positions.
She is survived by her son, Steven Smith (Donna) of Burbank, California; nephews Richard DeVoe (Christy) of Walnut Creek, California, Glenn DeVoe (Melinda) of Idaho Falls and Craig Schiffmacher of Manhasset, New York; one granddaughter; five grandnephews and nieces and four great grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Rita Schiffmacher, and a brother, Franklin DeVoe.
Interment will be at Greenfield Cemetery, Hempstead, New York. Arrangements are under the direction of Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge, in Idaho Falls.
