Marilyn Horman Scoresby Sargent, 80, of Idaho Falls, passed away on Thursday February 23, 2017, after living a busy life of service and love.
She was born on February 8, 1937, to Merrill and Delila Horman. She had an older brother, Wallace Gary, and a younger brother, Clinton Lamar. Tragedy struck when in April of 1938. Merrill was sent to the state psychiatric hospital in Blackfoot, Idaho, and then again when Delila died November 9, 1942, in a train/car collision. Since Merrill was unable to take care of his children, they were adopted by Merrill’s sister, Josie and Clifford Scoresby. It was a happy occasion when six year old Marilyn came to live with them. She was the seventh child out of 10 children; Fern, Bill, Leah, Delbert, Charles, Mary Lou, Marilyn, Fred, Harold, and John. Marilyn had long, dark brown ringlets and loved to help out at home making beds and sweeping floors. She was always so willing and helpful around the home. She loved her new family and has wonderful memories growing up in the Scoresby home.
Marilyn met Neil Sargent when she was in ninth grade. He was smitten with her and knew she was the one for him. They were high school sweethearts and Marilyn never kissed another boy but him. He gave her an engagement ring before he left on a LDS mission to the Southern States. Marilyn waited for him and they were married on December 30, 1958.
Marilyn obtained a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Brigham Young University. She was teaching at Murray Elementary when Neil proposed to her. They were married in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple and had four children. They did not have much money but there was a lot of love with these four children. Marilyn and the kids kept busy as Neil finished his Bachelors Degree. He worked extra jobs and Marilyn stayed home with the babies and also taught some years as an elementary school teacher in Ammon, Idaho. After seven years, they decided to have four more children and moved to Iona, Idaho, for the rest of her life. They all enjoyed camping and fishing as a family and have many memories being outdoors together. Marilyn was an amazing gardener which she enjoyed until the end. She was also a great homemaker with skills in sewing, canning, cooking, and cleaning. She taught her children how to work. Marilyn taught elementary school for close to 30 years. She mostly taught second grade and was an amazing teacher that loved her students and they loved her.
Marilyn has served as a counselor in the Young Women’s Presidency, Ward Teacher Trainer, Homemaking counselor in the Stake Relief Society, and teacher in various organizations. She has always had a strong testimony of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Marilyn’s greatest joys were her family. She always wanted to be near family. She took care of Neil the last 20 years of his life as he struggled with health problems. She was a faithful and loving caretaker all her life. Together they were blessed with eight children with their spouses: Bryce and Lauralyn Sargent, Janeal Sargent, Kevin and Cathy Sargent, Lorraine and Courtney Cox, Alan and Annette Sargent, Angie (deceased) and Justin Eller, Travis and Christa Sargent, and Denise and Adam Christian. She spoiled 33 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren with one more on the way. She is having a great reunion with her sweetheart and her daughter she called Angel, Angie Eller, who died from cancer on August 6, 2015.
We love you, Mom.
Keep gardening in heaven.
