Helen Marie Bankhead Bates, 69, of Ammon, passed away June 3, 2018, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center of natural causes. Marie was born January 10, 1949, in Tooele, Utah, to Harlan V. Bankhead and Opal Darlene Franklin Bankhead. She grew up and attended schools in Tooele, Utah, graduating from Tooele High School in 1967. She then attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah, where she met Larry Ray Bates. They were married in the Logan Utah LDS Temple on March 18, 1971. Marie and Larry were blessed with four children, Joseph, Anne, Jeffrey, and Jonathan. They made their home in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where Marie worked as an office manager for their family businesses. Following Larry's passing in November 2002, Marie returned to college and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology from Idaho State University in 2003. She then pursued a new career through the BEA until her death. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in several callings, but her favorite was teaching Gospel Doctrine. For the last five years, she served faithfully as a temple worker in the Idaho Falls Temple. She enjoyed reading, cooking, camping painting, crocheting, and spending time with her family. Marie is survived by her son, Joseph (Erika) Bates of Meridian, ID; daughter Anne Marie (David) Begey of Swedesboro, NJ; son, Jeffrey (Hattie) Bates of Meridian, ID; son, Jonathan Bates of Ammon, ID; mother, Opal Bankhead of Vernon, UT; brother, Franklin (Dana) Bankhead of Kearns, UT; sister, Christine (Lee) Belnap of Sandy, UT; brother, Kay (Tammie) Bankhead of Grantsville, UT; brother, John Bankhead of West Valley, UT; brother, Steven (Dot) Bankhead of Tooele, UT; brother, Mark (Leisa) Bankhead of Tooele, UT; sister, Carol Bankhead of Phoenix, AZ; sister, Kathy Bankhead of Vernon,UT; sister, Laura Bankhead (Reuben Johnson); and six grandchildren, Siyana and Emma Begey, Brecon, Madelyn, Sophie, and Gabrielle Bates. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry R. Bates, and her father, Harlan V. Bankhead. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2018, at the Ammon LDS 21st Ward, 4030 John Adams Parkway, with Brother Mitch Freed officiating. The family will visit with friends from 12-1:45 p.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Shelley-Hillcrest Cemetery in Shelley, Idaho.
