Mariana “Mahana” Wikitoria Kohu Stewart 65, of Idaho Falls, passed away August 10, 2013, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. Mariana was born January 30, 1948, in Tauranga, New Zealand, to Kotene Ianga Kohu and Rangiwhakarewa Waitara. She grew up and attended schools in New Zealand. She continued her education at Brigham Young University and Riverside City College. Mariana lived in Riverside, California, for 34 years before moving to Idaho Falls in 2006. She worked as a records officer for the California Department of Corrections while in California. While in Idaho Falls she worked at Clair E. Gale Junior High as an aide. On August 18, 1972, she married Daniel Robert Stewart in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. Mariana was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served the American Indian people in the Southwest Indian Mission from 1969 to 1971. Mariana served in various capacities, including music chairman and choir director, coach for basketball, volleyball, and softball, Girls Camp Director and other callings in Young Women and Relief Society at the ward and Stake level. She also taught Seminary. Mariana enjoyed playing sports, musical instruments and teaching the youth in piano, violin, and guitar. Mariana was a soloist for The Messiah Sing-In both as an alto and a soprano. She was a bell ringer for a year in the Wesley Bell Choir of Trinity United Methodist Church in Idaho Falls. She also performed in the Lamanite Generation as one of the original members. She also was a soloist with the Riverside Master Chorale and played the cello with the Riverside Orchestra. Most of all she loved serving people. Survivors include her loving husband, Danny, of Idaho Falls, ID, and a sister, Matangi (Eddie) Borell of Tauranga, New Zealand. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Michael Joseph Kohu and John Kohu, and one sister, Nellie Kohu. Funeral Services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013, at the Taylor Mountain LDS Stake Center, 260 Castlerock Lane, with Bishop Scott Davis of the Boulevard Ward officiating. The family will visit with friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge Avenue. Burial will be in Fielding Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Idaho Central Credit Union in the name of Mariana Stewart Memorial.
