Marcia Jean Hughes passed away July 2, 2011, at Mount Vernon Assisted Living in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where she had been a resident for the past two years. Marcia was born January 21, 1929, to parents Marcia May (Stebbins) and Harry Anton Dober. She was the last of nine children born to the Dobers.
Marcia attended school in Billings, Montana, graduating from Billings Senior High in the spring of 1947. In the fall after graduating, she met Clain “Red” Hughes and she often stated it was “love at first sight.” Red and Marcia were married January 24, 1948. Their marriage saw the birth of three children: Harry Edward, Linda Marie, and Mark Jay Hughes.
Marcia and Red spent the early years of their marriage in Billings, Montana, where Red worked for Carter Oil and Marcia was able to stay home and raise their children. In the summer of 1958, they purchased the Coast to Coast Store in Edgemont, South Dakota. Red and Marcia liked the independence of owning their own business. The family spent five years in South Dakota, but always longed to return to their home state of Montana. Red and Marcia purchased the Coast to Coast Store in Malta, Montana, and the family returned to Montana in the summer of 1963. It was here that their three children enjoyed small city living and the privileges associated with high school sports. Red and Marcia were always on the sidelines supporting the efforts of the local high school teams. Marcia was active in Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron.
In the early 1970’s, after selling the hardware store, Red and Marcia moved to Butte, Montana, where Red returned to his pipefitting days and worked as a plumber. Marcia worked as a bookkeeper at the Butte Sheltered Workshop. While in Butte they were active in the Elks Lodge, participated in league bowling, and spent countless hours traveling to a variety of sporting events of their grandchildren. After retiring, Red and Marcia found their true passion, camping and fishing. Clark Canyon, near Dillon, was their favorite spot. After several years of retirement and many long winters, they decided to head “south” to avoid the snow and ice.
They spent many wonderful years along the Colorado River, settling in Parker, Arizona. It was here that Marcia’s health began to decline and in January, 2009, they were forced to move closer to family.
Marcia is survived by her husband of 63 years, Red, of Idaho Falls, ID; children, Harry (Patty) of Thermopolis, WY, Linda Perlinski (Terry Evans) of Bozeman, MT, and Mark of Idaho Falls, ID; grandchildren, Anna Hughes (Barry Malmburg) of Philomath, OR, Jamey Perlinski (Kylie) of Bozeman, MT, Trisha Hughes of Seattle, WA, Jeremy Perlinski (Heather) of Helena, MT, Jessica Perlinski (Ian Murren) of Stamford, CT, Justin Hughes (Verity) of Moscow, ID, Paul Hughes (Erin Linley) of Atlanta, GA, and Tom Hughes of Moscow, ID; great-grandchildren, Kole and Kody Larsen, Axel Malmburg, Austin and Riley Perlinski, and Carter and Brady Perlinski.
