Lucile Steele

Lucile I. Steele - 05/27/2002 Lucile I. Steele - 05/27/2002 LUCILE I. STEELE IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Lucile Isabelle Steele, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away at the age of 81 on Saturday, May 25, 2002. Lucile was born April 17, 1921, in Herrick, South Dakota, to Mildred and James Slaughter. The family moved to Idaho Falls in 1938, where Lucile attended and graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1940. She then attended the University of Colorado and graduated from business college in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1944, Lucile went alone by train to marry her fiancée, Lieutenant Ralph J. Steele, who was stationed in the Army at Ford Ord, California. They were married on June 21, 1944, in Monterey, California. Ralph then went overseas with the 42nd Division, and Lucile returned to be with her parents in Great Falls, Montana. When the war ended and Ralph came home from Germany, they started farming east of Idaho Falls. Lucile was never one to be left out: she drove truck, cooked for hired men, and, for extra money, she raised chickens and lambs with her children. Lucile had a beautiful voice, sang in the Presbyterian Church choir, and won many vocal contests throughout the state. She served as President of the Bonneville County and Idaho State Cattlemen’s Association Women’s Auxiliary. While Ralph was in the Idaho legislature, Lucile served as President of the “Legisladies,” the legislature's women’s support group, as well as participating in the choral group. Lucile was also involved in the Bonneville County Republican Women’s organization. Lucile and Ralph have a family of three daughters and two sons. They are: Nancy (Brent) Elg of Boise; Carolyn (Tom) Harrison of Idaho Falls; Katherine (Tom) Moriarty of Idaho Falls; Wayne (Susan) Steele of Boise; and Scott (Stella) Steele of Idaho Falls. Other survivors include her ten grandchildren: Eric Elg, Shannon Elg, Lauren Roberts, Kristine Moriarty, Kara Moriarty, Janelle Steele, Jake Steele, Ian Steele, Jordan Steele, and Ryan Steele. Other survivors include her sisters, Dora (Clair E.) Gale of Idaho Falls and Corine (Rex) Blodgett of Moscow, Idaho. Lucile was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred (Ball) Slaughter and James Slaughter; sisters, Bernita (“Dutch”) Jaeger and Gertrude (Bill) Johnson; and her brother, Eugene (LaVerne) Slaughter. This wonderful woman will be remembered as a beautiful soul who loved to dance and sing. Her husband and family were the most precious things to her, and she will be sorely missed by all. Memorial services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 325 Elm Street in Idaho Falls, on Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at 1 p.m. Friends are welcome to join the family at the Graveside Services at the Iona Cemetery east of Idaho Falls immediately following the services.
