Louis Steven Cannon, 90, of Idaho Falls, passed away July 29, 2015, at Parkwood Meadows Assisted Living Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was under the care of Encompass Hospice.
Louis was born April 12, 1925, in Shelley, Idaho, to Edward Otto Cannon and Barbara Ellen Nelson Cannon, and joined his older brother, Leland, on the family farm east of Shelley in the Jameston area. Louis attended schools in Shelley and showed talent in track, often outrunning the bigger, taller, and supposedly faster boys.
In 1934, Louis met and fell in love with Alta Alene Rhoades of Idaho Falls. Both were 18 years old, and because they didn’t think their parents would approve of marriage at such an early age, they eloped! With the help of Leland and his wife, Mabel, Louis and Alta drove to Jackson, Wyoming, where they were married September 21, 1943. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple July 6, 1960.
Louis served honorably in World War II, first as a communications specialist, then as a driver in the Transportation Corps for the U. S. Army, and recalled stringing telephone and telegraph wire with bullets whizzing all around him. He served in New Guinea and the Philippines.
On August 3, 1945, Louis and Alta became the proud parents of a baby girl, Frances Alene Cannon. On September 3, 1952, their son, Steven R. Cannon, was born. When Louis returned from the service, he took a job with the City of Idaho Falls. Louis, along with future Idaho Falls City Councilman Russell Fogg, planted trees at the newly developed Pinecrest Golf Course. Louis would often drive past the golf course in later years to admire his work!
Louis worked for Boise-Payette, then Boise-Cascade Corporation in the company’s Idaho Falls lumber yard. He started out as a laborer, then became a driver, then dispatcher. In the early 1970s Boise Cascade teamed up with the Farm Home Administration to build moderately priced homes. Louis was supervisor for that project, and supervised the construction of hundreds of quality built homes throughout eastern Idaho. After 47 years with Boise Cascade, Louis retired in 1987. He and Alta then pursued another of their dreams . . . travel. Louis and Alta spent many winters in Cave Creek, Arizona, and, along with Alta’s sister, Josephine, and her husband, Dwight, spent two wonderful weeks in Hawaii.
Alta passed away May 8, 2008. In 2013, Louis moved from his home on Cleveland Street to Parkwood Meadows Assisted Living Center. He quickly made friends with the residents there and enjoyed their company, and they enjoyed his!
Louis is survived by his daughter, Frances (Ronald, deceased) Sessions of Island Park, ID, and son, Steve (Mary Alice Jensen) Cannon of Idaho Falls, ID; eight grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sweet wife, Alta, his brother, Leland, and sister, Ada.
