Linda Shumway

Linda Jean Belton Shumway of Ammon, Idaho, passed away quietly at home from cancer on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, under the loving care of her family. Linda was born August 10, 1939, in Santa Barbara, California, to Vernon Belton and Beverly Gross Belton. After Linda was born they had 4 more children; Janet, Charles, Paula and Suzi (Ed Shinderling). Linda's parents joined the LDS Church when she was age seven and Linda remained a faithful member of the Church. She was a good student, and after graduating from Santa Barbara High School she enrolled in BYU-Provo and graduated with an Elementary Education Degree in 1961. While there she met Rex Wayne Shumway and on June 16, 1961, they were sealed in the Los Angeles LDS Temple. Linda taught school at Mapleton Elementary School for three years to help with finances while Rex earned his bachelor's and master's degrees. In 1965, they moved with two children, Rebecca (Robert Walker) and Andrew (Janae West) to Tucson, Arizona for Rex to pursue a PhD. A second daughter, Jennifer (Paul Georgia) was born to them there. After four more years of school for Rex they took a job working for the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. Linda lived the remainder of her life in Ammon where sons, Matthew, Peter (Natalie Moss) and Benjamin were born. Linda accepted many church callings and put energy into doing her assignments well. While serving as Ammon Stake Primary President she went to the homes of newly-called ward presidents and trained them in their calling. A fun Stake Primary activity was a children's across the plains trek simulation held at the stake farm. Jennifer remembers taking her two goats on the trek. Linda also served as a Ward Relief Society President, on many home making boards, choir director several times, and as a teacher of various youth groups. One of the callings in which she excelled was that of a visiting teacher. The women she was called to serve always felt loved and cared for. From 2005 to 2007, Linda and Rex worked as FamilySearch missionaries in Salt Lake City. Linda learned that many people do not have the computer skills to work on the new internet-based family history. When Linda got back home she developed an eight class series of beginning computer classes which are still being taught at the Idaho Falls FamilySearch Library. Her greatest accomplishment, and the one she spent the most time and effort on was serving and loving her family. She was more interested in staying home with the children than traveling or doing anything for herself. Linda was well known for her skills in making bread, raising a garden, and canning the produce. She could always be found in the kitchen creating innumerable delicious meals. Her children and grandchildren knew that she was very interested in them and what they were doing and at any time was willing to stop whatever she was doing and listen to them or help them with a project. Linda spent over ten years as a temple ordinance worker and loved it. Her wisdom, devotion and testimony will be fondly remembered. Linda is survived by her husband of 56 years, her six children, 21 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and sister and a grandson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2018, at the Blackhawk Building, 7118 S. Ledgerock (go S. on 45th E., to find the chapel). The family will visit with friends on Friday from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at Wood East Side, 963 S. Ammon and Saturday from 10:00-10:45 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Ammon Cemetery.
