Lilly "Laverne Rhodes" Rhodes

Lilly LaVerne Rhodes was born in Spanish Fork, Utah on February 22, 1924 to Joseph Bonifacio Gomez and Lilly Lucille Braithwaite Gomez. LaVerne passed away on Friday, October 4, 2013, in her Idaho Falls home with family by her side. LaVerne graduated from Cedar City High School in 1942. She enlisted in the United States Navy and was a telecommunications operator during World War II. After her military service, LaVerne met her husband and sweetheart, Donald Walter Rhodes, while working at the Veterans Affairs Office at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. They were married for time and all eternity on December 18, 1946 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. LaVerne and Don resided seven years in Richland, WA, before moving to Idaho Falls where they built their life and love together. LaVerne was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various positions, her favorites being Cub Scouts and Homemaking. She and Donald served faithfully as missionaries in the Spanish Extraction Program for many years. LaVerne enjoyed all of nature and God’s beautiful creations. She was a skilled seamstress, baker and enjoyed providing service to others. Her most treasured moments were times spent with family, especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. LaVerne is survived by a brother, Allan B. (Sharon) Gomez, one daughter, Karalie (Wayne) Morgan of Idaho Falls; and five sons, Robert Erwin (Jo) Rhodes of Prescott, Ariz., Barry Elmo (Lorraine) Rhodes of Ucon, Idaho, Kevin Donald (Raelene) Rhodes of Fort Worth, Texas, Kerry (Sheri) Rhodes of Rhome, Texas, and Kip Allan (Melissa) Rhodes of Idaho Falls. She has 23 living grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, her parents, one sister Lorraine, a brother Erwin; one granddaughter, Leda (7); and two great grandsons, Kade (4) and Dillon (2). Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, October 11, at the Idaho Falls LDS West Stake Center, 2040 Brentwood Drive, with Bishop Troy Bodily of the Idaho Falls Westhill Ward officiating. The family will visit with friends one hour prior to services at the Stake Center. Burial will be in Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery.
