LILLIAN HARTWELL
IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Lillian Hartwell, 94, died May 10, 2003, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls. She was born January 5, 1909, in Paoli, Indiana, to Arthur and Alta Melton, the second of six children. She came with her parents by railroad to the Idaho Falls area when she was five. They lived in Rexburg and Mud Lake before moving to Idaho Falls, where she graduated from high school.
She went to Ricks College and University of Idaho Southern Branch, now Idaho State University, where she obtained her Idaho teacher certification.
She married Frank Hartwell of Mud Lake, Idaho, November 25, 1930 in Idaho Falls. They lived in Albion, Idaho; Grandview, Idaho; Grand Mound, Washington; and Hoquiam, Washington before operating a ranch at Mud Lake. During that time she taught at Mud Lake, Lost River and Osgood elementary schools.
In 1945 they moved to Idaho Falls where she taught at Eagle Rock Grade School. She and Frank operated the Minit Market on West Broadway for 23 years. They retired in 1973 and spent many winters in Phoenix. He died in 1989.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Mary Lynn Hartwell of Idaho Falls, Idaho; a daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Frank Bowles of Boise, Idaho; daughter-in-law Jean Hartwell of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Grandchildren: Jeffrey Bowles, Anchorage, AK; Becky Bowles, Palm Springs, CA; Thomas W. Hartwell, Idaho Falls, ID; Julie Hartwell Smart, Seattle WA; and Jonalyn R. Clayton, Hayden, Idaho and great-granddaughters: Alexandra, Adria, and Talia Bowles of Anchorage AK; and Anna Quinn Smart of Seattle WA.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Suzanne Bowles Galloway; four sisters, Gladys Winterfeld, Elizabeth Melton, Grayce Probst, and Alismae Earl, and a brother, Delmont Melton.
The family extends its sincere thanks to the staff of Riverview Assisted Living Center - Corinne, Olga, Isabell, Suzanne, and Cheryl, for the loving and dignified care they provided Lillian during the past 17 months. We also extend our love and thanks to Lupe Jockumsen for her dedicated service and friendship to Lillian.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 237 N. Water, with Reverend Thom Larson officiating. The family will visit with friends at the church for one hour prior to the services. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Wood Funeral Home.

My sympathies are with you. She lived a good and long life but it is still difficult to lose a mother/grandmother. Love, Patsy
