Lavon Jenkins

Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and Sister, LaVon Millar Jenkins, passed away May 4, 2012, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She was born on July 1, 1918 in Shelley, Idaho, the first child of Roderick Millar and Mary Ellen Kelley Millar. At the tender age of eight, she lost her mother and twin sisters in childbirth. She lived with her Grandmother and Grandfather Millar until her father met and married Louie Dial. The little family of five children moved back to the farm and over the years she gained six more brothers and sisters. Mom graduated from Shelley High School; she went on to Nursing School and became an R.N. While working at the LDS Hospital in the Maternity ward, she met and married the brother-in-law of one of her patients. She married her sweetheart, Tom Jenkins on January 1, 1940 at 12:01 a.m., the first wedding of the New Year. Mom had a green thumb. Her flowers were always beautiful, especially her roses. She always had something growing, and with tender care she would start plants for friends and family. Tom and LaVon enjoyed riding horses and it became a family outing to ride everyday. She was very active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in the Sunday School, as the YWMIA President, Primary President, and held various Relief Society positions. She has done genealogy work in the LDS Church extraction program and was a ward missionary. In the summer of 1972, Tom’s health began failing and he passed away August 10, 1972. With her three children married, LaVon was left alone. She decided to go back to work. She had great nursing skills and was a very kind and thoughtful nurse. LaVon worked in the nursing field and retired on her 80th birthday. LaVon kept busy with her home, family, Church, and flowers. Special thanks to Dr. Alan Avondet, the 5th floor nurses at EIRMC, and the staff at the Life Care Center of Idaho Falls. LaVon is survived by a daughter, Sherry Lynn (Art) Bohman of Cedar City, UT; sons, Ken Jenkins of Idaho Falls, ID; Dick (Mary Kay) Jenkins of Idaho Falls, ID; and, an ex-Daughter-in-law, Janice Homburg, of Meridian, ID, whom she considered as a another daughter; thirteen grandchildren, forty-one great grandchildren, and fourteen great - great grandchildren with another one on the way, all whom called her Grandma Millie; a sister, Afton (Earl) Brewster of Blackfoot, ID; half-brothers and sisters, Bryce Millar of Nampa, ID; Ruth (Cliff) Brady of Idaho Falls, ID; Sybil (Dale) Leatham of Idaho Falls, ID; JoAnn (Jack) Peck of St. George, UT; and Roger (Valerie) Millar of St. George, UT. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Tom; brothers, Kenneth, and Wayne; sisters, Beth (George) Furner, Carma (Mel) Hansen; and half-brother, Rod Lamar. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at the Idaho Falls LDS 9th Ward Chapel (395 2nd Street). The family will visit with friends from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Monday evening at Wood East Side (963 South Ammon Road) and Tuesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Shelley - Hillcrest Cemetery under the direction of Wood Funeral Home.
