Lamar Johnson

LaMar John Johnson, 76 of Idaho Falls, passed away July 17, 2011 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center of complications from injuries received in an accident. LaMar was born December 27, 1934 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Glenn Howard Johnson and Ellen Sophia Scott Johnson. As a young Elder, he served in the Southern States Mission. He then went on to receive a Bachelor's Degree from Utah State University as well as a Master's Degree in Biochemistry. He also received a Master's Degree in Biophysics from the University of Kansas and a PhD in Radiation Biology from Colorado State University. He was raised in Milo and later lived in White Rock, New Mexico from 1968 to 1980 where he worked in many positions including as director of the H-1 and H-8 group at Los Alamos National Laboratories. He married Priscilla Lane Blue Johnson on November 10, 1978 in Los Alamos, New Mexico. In 1980 he and Priscilla moved to Idaho Falls where he worked as a director at Idaho Research Center for 20 years. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, LaMar fulfilled many church callings, including Stake Executive Secretary and Clerk, High Council Member, Stake Employment Specialist, and Ammon 2nd Ward Bishopric. He served as a temple worker in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple and was currently serving with his wife in the Rexburg LDS Temple. Together, he and Priscilla served in the Idaho Pocatello Mission and South Africa Cape Town Mission. LaMar enjoyed family history, farming and gardening. He loved his family and took great joy in his grandchildren. He greatly enjoyed music and was a pianist, and writer. LaMar is survived by five sons, Kevin (Darlene) Johnson of Las Vegas, NV; Jared (Lynette) Johnson of New Market, MD; Quinn (Tabitha) Johnson of Columbia, MO; Spencer (Alecia) Johnson of Rigby, ID; and Scott (Emma) Johnson of Ririe, ID; a daughter, Michelle (Ray) Coleman of Sandy, UT; a stepson Loren (DaNiel) Jose of Idaho Falls, ID; a stepdaughter, Rinee (Eddis) Drayton of Draper, UT; two brothers, Ronald (Dixie) Johnson and Bruce (Martha) Johnson, both from Idaho Falls, ID ; a sister Louise (Lavar) Newman of Monteview, ID; four brothers-in-laws, Lavon (Betty) Blue, Bobby (Betty) Blue, Carson (Susan) Blue, and Harry (Debra) Blue; two sisters-in-law, Patsy Sloat and Shirley (Eldon) Fransisco; and 33 grandchildren. LaMar was preceded in death by his wife, Priscilla, on July 9, 2011. He is also predeceased by his parents, Glenn and Ellen Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 21, 2011 at the Ririe LDS Shelton Ward, 198 North 4300 East, with Bishop Danny Gene Ferguson officiating. The family will visit with family and friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 South Ammon Rd., Idaho Falls, and Thursday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery.
