On March 28, 2023, Kim André Hansen returned to the loving arms of our Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ after losing his battle with cancer. He had a beautiful reunion with his first wife, Linn.
Kim was born on October 2, 1951, in Salt Lake City to Hubert Elwood Hansen and Irene Anderson. He was the middle child of their five children with older siblings, Vicky and Ron, and younger siblings, Paul and Phil. As a young boy, Kim loved the outdoors and would play outside until the sun went down. He also developed an early love for cooking and would bake frequently. When he was eight years old, he joined the Cub Scouts in Pack 373 and soon found his lifelong love for Scouting. At 15 years old, he combined his love of cooking and Scouting and became a staff cook for camp. Then at the age of 17, due to a shortage of adult leaders, he stepped in and essentially became the acting Scoutmaster of Troop 373. Kim graduated from Highland High School and attended Brigham Young University, majoring in Youth Leadership. While attending a wilderness survival class, a pretty young lady, Linn Marie Tonks, came to class late and caught his eye; however, that is as far as it went for Kim. Linn would spend the next two years chasing Kim and it was not until, according to him, she played dirty and spoke with his family and roommates, who had an intervention with him, that the lightbulb finally turned on. Kim and Linn were married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 21, 1974.
Kim graduated from Brigham Young University and dedicated his life to the Boy Scouts. Kim and Linn made their home in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where he served as a District Executive in the Teton Peaks Council and was later promoted to Council Program Director. While in Idaho Falls, they experienced a major heartache as their first son, Rhett André, was stillborn. They were later blessed with three sons: Jess Carter, Ryan Franklin, and Andrew Oliver. Kim was then offered the position of Field Director for the Great Salt Lake Council and moved the family to Bountiful, Utah. He was later promoted to Director of Support Services. While in Bountiful, Kim and Linn were blessed to finally welcome a daughter to their family, Cynthia Marie.
In 1990, Kim was offered the Council Scout Executive position for the Ore-Ida Council, and he moved his family to Boise, Idaho. He was instrumental there in obtaining the funding needed to build the Farris C. Lind Scout Service Center. In 1996, the family was able to move back to Idaho Falls when Kim took the position of Council Scout Executive for the Grand Teton Council. He finished his professional scouting career there and retired in 2006. Throughout his career, he had exceptional talent for designing quality programs, training events, summer camps, and refining the service orientation of the Order of the Arrow. Kim had a willingness and desire to be of service and selflessly helped those around him and was a blessing to several in the community. He guided and mentored several volunteers, building lifelong friendships.
Outside of Scouting, Kim loved to garden and took great pride in his yard and flowers. He enjoyed cooking up family feasts with only the best ingredients and sharing the latest discovery he made while working on family history. When the extended family gathered for Christmas parties, Uncle Kim was known for always bringing Grandma Hansen’s Rice Puff Balls and teaching the family about their ancestors with some new crazy game he invented. He abhorred playing card games, much to the dismay of his wife and children. Linn would gather the children around to play just to tease him. Kim and Linn had a love of musicals and Sunday night would be family movie night watching musicals or the Wonderful World of Disney.
Life took a turn for Kim when Linn was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer and on September 1, 2000, Linn passed away from it. In the mist of grieving for Linn, an old friend reached out to offer comfort and soon that friendship developed into a deep love for one another. On April 7, 2001, Kim married Cynthia Sherrill Thomas in Salt Lake City. It was a wonderful union as Cindy shared his love for Scouting and helped him finish his scouting career. They moved to St. George in 2006 to a house rich in history with a wonderful yard. This allowed Kim to spend his days outside gardening and attending to his flowerbeds. In retirement he also enjoyed working on family history and spending time with his daughter.
Kim was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a Bishop, High Councilor, High Priest Group Leader, Elder Quorum’s President, and Ward Clerk. The members of the 5th Ward in St. George knew of Kim’s selfless service and his ability to always provide when a need arose. He would often be the first to lend a helping hand and never asked for anything in return. Kim’s love and testimony of the Savior was strengthened in 2016 when he had the opportunity to visit Israel. For a short time, Kim was also a temple ordinance worker in the St. George Utah Temple, which he considered to be one of his greatest callings.
Kim is survived by his second wife, Cynthia Sherrill Thomas Hansen; children, Jess (Shanna) of Taylorsville, UT, Ryan (Becca) of Rexburg, ID, Andy (Katie) of Clinton, UT, Cynthia Marie of St. George, UT; step-sons, Mark (Terri) Thomas of Salt Lake, UT, Scott (Robyn) Thomas of Washington, D.C., Tim (Patricia) Thomas of Kaysville, UT, Courtney (Susan) Thomas of Murray, UT, BJ (Sunny) Thomas of Lehi, UT, and Josh Thomas of Tremonton, UT; 13 grandchildren and 20 step-grandchildren.
