AMMON, ID -- Kenneth Malcolm Carlson, 91, of Idaho Falls, passed away peacefully and calmly in his sleep on February 6, 2009, at The Gables Assisted Living Center.
Kenneth was born July 8, 1917, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Ernest Malcolm Carlson and Augusta Nelson Carlson. He was the third of five children. Kenneth grew up in New Sweden and attended school there.
He married Lael Stolworthy December 27, 1940, in Salt Lake City, Utah. They settled in Shelley, Idaho, where they raised five children. He started in the potato warehouse business with partners Leo Christensen and Otto Korte. Kenneth was president of the Shelley Kiwanis Club and president of the Shelley Chamber of Commerce.
Kenneth and Lael moved to Idaho Falls in 1969. They enjoyed a winter home in Sun Lakes, Arizona, as well as their cabin in Island Park where they created many lasting memories with their children and grandchildren. Lael preceded him in death on January 18, 2002. One of Kenneth's best memories was floating the Middle Fork of the Salmon River with many of his good friends, starting in 1951. After retiring, he became an avid golfer, winning a hole-in-one award. Throughout his life he enjoyed fishing. He also enjoyed traveling to England, Italy, Ireland and throughout the United States. But his most memorable trip was to his father's homeland of Sweden where he was able to meet several of his father's family members.
Kenneth is survived by his children, Kent (Carolee) Carlson, Shelley; Karla (Barry) Erickson, Bountiful, Utah; Robert (Vicki) Carlson, Chandler, Arizona; Larry (Jennifer) Carlson, Idaho Falls; and Suzy Carlson, Salt Lake City, Utah; 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren; his brother Floyd Carlson, Culver, Oregon; and sister Florence Hall, Pingree, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and brothers, Vaughn and Marvin Carlson.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2009, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge Avenue, Idaho Falls. The family will visit with friends Monday from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at Wood Funeral Home. Interment will be in the New Sweden Cemetery.
