Karla Burtenshaw

Karla W. Burtenshaw, 76, of Idaho Falls, passed away Friday, January 8, 2016, at Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona.

She was born January 13, 1939, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Riley and Iris (Oswald) Westergard. She grew up in Iona, Idaho, where she attended Iona Elementary. She graduated from Bonneville High School and received a BS in Education from Utah State University, where she was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority.

She married John Maurice Judy on November 21, 1961, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. John attended Brigham Young University, where he and Karla were resident dorm parents. They were blessed with four children: Jan Elizabeth, Jon Riley (died in infancy), Kerry Lynn and Jon Riley. Karla was a school teacher who taught PE and Health in junior high and high school. She was also the Honeybees advisor at Bonneville High School and coached several sports, including gymnastics. She and John enjoyed twelve years together before John passed away in 1974.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in various callings and was highly active in her community, affiliating with Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Iona Historical Museum, and many other volunteer projects. Farming and ranching were also a big part of her life and she spent many sunny Idaho summers working and playing on her Henry Creek Ranch.

She married Robert (Early Bird Bob) Burtenshaw on July 5, 1983, adding seven children and several grandchildren to the family. Karla and Bob enjoyed gardening, traveling, and being with family and friends. They served as LDS missionaries in the Ohio Columbus mission (2003-2004) and were directors of the Idaho Falls Temple Visitors’ Center (2006-2008). They also enjoyed wintering in Mesa, Arizona. They had 32 great years together.

Karla is survived by her husband, Bob; children, Jan Hilton of Lake Stevens, WA; Kerry Judy of Mesa, AZ; Jon (Kristen) Judy of Idaho Falls; brother, Ray (Louise) Westergard; sister, JoAnn (Gary) Ball; in-laws, Joann Anderson and Jeffrey (June) Judy; step children, Debbie (Carl) Gallup, Kevin (Cecy) Burtenshaw, Lanette (Mike) Ehlers, Curtis (Torri) Burtenshaw, Denise (Michael) Kirkham, Lorene (Mark) Millard, Mindy (Kevin) Knudsen; 37 grandchildren and 42 + great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 16, 2016, at the Iona LDS Stake Center (corner of the Ririe Highway and 55th East). The family will visit with friends on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Wood Funeral　Home East Side (963 S. Ammon Road) and Saturday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Iona Cemetery.
