Karl Lester Morgan, 87, of Idaho Falls, passed away on September 16, 2016, at his home. Karl was born on July 2, 1929, in Spanish Fork, Utah. Karl attended Provo High School in Provo, Utah, where he met the love of his life, Dorinne Pendleton. Karl married this high school sweetheart on March 16, 1951. Karl graduated from Brigham Young University (BYU) with a bachelor's degree in Geology and began a 35-year career with Texaco Oil Company. He began as a field exploration geologist and ended his career as the head of Exploration of the Western United States, having turned down a VP position that would have required that he move his family to New York, which was not an option for this western loving man. He was a lifelong airplane modeler and a member of the Society of Antique Modelers (AMA Club #1 out of Denver), specializing in pre-1942 free flight planes powered by gasoline or rubber. Karl flew in national and international free flight contest, competing in a world class field successfully. He later turned his passion of building free flight planes into obtaining his private pilot license to fly sailplanes. Karl was a self-taught gun smith and gun stock builder. His skill at checkering gun stocks was unmatched. Karl hand manufactured a 50 caliber black powder rifle from scratch. He custom manufactured each component including the action, the fasteners, stock, and fittings, only purchasing the barrel, rear sight and butt plate. Karl traveled to Idaho with this hand built muzzleloader to accompany his son on a moose hunt. His son successfully filled his moose tag using this custom built muzzleloader. Karl was an avid angler and passed these skills onto his sons and grandchildren. A builder not only of rifles, but a builder of fly rods and a tier of flies. Karl had a keen interest in past civilizations and cultures and was an avid student of their histories. A desert rat by nature, he could unlock the secrets of any given area and return with treasures of the earth and from past travelers. Karl possessed a dry sense of humor and a quit wit. Integrity and generosity were the hallmarks of his character. Karl is survived by his wife, Dorinne Morgan; sons, Curtis (Michelle) Morgan of Denver, Colorado and David (Renee) Morgan of Idaho Falls, Idaho; siblings, Annette (Ken) Balser of Orem, Utah, Peg (Leon) Clark of Riverton, Utah, Robert (Eleanor) Newman of Ogden, Utah, Judith Morgan of LaClede, Idaho, Patricia (Bob) Bowen of LaClede, Idaho, Gene (Marsha) Newman of Sandy, Utah, Janece (Gary) Dorittie of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Janeen Best of Sandy, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dean S. Morgan and David Paul Morgan. No services will be held.
