Joy Otteson Romrell passed away May 23, 2014 following her husband a short 48 hours after his passing, and after living a busy life of service and love.
She was born December 11, 1921 in Rexburg, Idaho to Nephi and Lenore Allred Otteson who were homesteaders in Ozone, Idaho. She was the youngest child with brothers and sisters Vern, Golda, Louie Dean, Alan, Ray, and Dilbert.
Joy spent her childhood years in Conrad, Montana where she lived a pioneer life style herding cows and sheep, and riding a horse to school. Joy moved to Ammon where she lived with her sister Dean Judy while she attended high school. She was an excellent student and participated in all of the high school activities including choir, band, drama, home economics and Seminary. She graduated from Ammon High School and earned a scholarship to beauty school. She graduated from Excelsis Beauty School in Idaho Falls, where she met her lifelong friends Virginia Poulson and Lova Seivers. The three girls moved to Ogden, Utah to work during the War years. There Joy met Virginia’s cousin Roland Romrell. For Joy, just from seeing Roland’s picture it was love at first sight.
Roland and Joy were married August 5, 1944, and were sealed August 8, 1944 in the Logan Utah Temple when Roland’s leave from Marine Corps training was extended.
After the war, Roland and Joy sold their farm in Lewisville and purchased the Ammon Blacksmith shop. Roland and Joy raised their family in Ammon where Joy served tirelessly in her home, church, and community, working side by side with Roland in all his business efforts.
Joy was a wonderful Mom and supported her children in all of their activities as she helped them grow their talents and testimonies. Joy continued to develop her sewing skills learned in 4-H and school. She was a wonderful seamstress and sewed countless dresses and suits for Easter, proms, weddings, and grandchildren. Joy was a creative cook and made wonderful bread, cookies and candies. Joy loved celebrations and made every birthday and holiday special and sponsored wonderful parties for her grandchildren.
Joy and Roland became snowbirds and built a home in Mesa, Arizona. They loved harvesting oranges, grapefruits and lemons and sharing them with friends and family in Idaho. While in Arizona she helped her husband with his wood-shop projects by doing the sanding and varnishing. Together they made hope chests and many other beautiful crafts for their home and their children.
Joy served in many church callings as ward and stake Primary chorister, Cub Scouts, and Relief Society. She taught the gospel through Primary Music. Joy had a beautiful voice and will be remembered for the songs she taught and sang at home and in Church. She sang in many choirs from Singing Mothers to the Leisure World Arizona Choir.
Joy continued the 4-H tradition started by her own mother. She led the Sunshine 4-H Club in Ammon so that all of her children and their friends could be busy learning important homemaking skills as part of their summer activities.
They traveled extensively in the states and abroad by winning trips through their mobile home sales.
Joy’s main focus in her life was loving her eternal sweetheart Roland Taylor Romrell. She was blessed with 10 children with their spouses: Van & LarRene Sargent, Dan & Brenda Jean Knight, Loren & Eileen Anderson, Maynard and LuDean Jackson, Jake & Karleen Garling, Garth & Amy Romrell, Calvin & Kristie Romrell, Dale & Christine Hepworth, Jerry & Janine Sandbakken, Layne & Valeen Terry. She spoiled her 56 grandchildren and forever prays for her growing posterity of over 107 great-grandchildren.
We love you, Mom. Keep singing.
