Joseph Harry Osloond

Joseph Harry "Joe" Osloond, was born March 13, 1924, in Rapid City, South Dakota, to Harry A. Osloond and Bess M. (Garland) Osloond.

Joe attended school through his junior year in Deadwood, South Dakota. He graduated high school in 1943 from Rapid City High School. In July of 1943, Joe joined the U.S. Navy. His basic training and specialist training was at Farragut Naval Training Station, on Lake Pend Oreille in northern Idaho. He then served as a Medical Corpsman in the South Pacific Islands during World War II. Following his service in the U.S Navy, Joe attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Black Hills University, and the University of Northern Colorado.

He played college ice hockey and had an opportunity to join the NHL. He declined and pursued a career teaching mathematics. Joe taught mathematics from 1950-1956 at Idaho Falls Senior High School. In 1956, he took the opportunity to work for the Atomic Energy Commission at the National Reactor Testing Station near Idaho Falls. He continued his work in the nuclear industry for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C. (1971-1980). He returned to Idaho Falls, Idaho, to work for The Department of Energy as the Supervisory Health Physicist in the Dosimetry Branch.

Joe married Eldred L. (Phipps) Read on July 6, 1948. Their family consisted of Betty Ann Read, Barbara Jo Read, Sandra L. and Joseph P. Osloond. Following Eldred’s death in 1969, Joe married Ellie L. (Martindale) Bates on January 2, 1971. Following Ellie’s death in 1993, Joe married Cecilia Ahleen (Thurston) Moriarity on October 1, 1994.

Joe was preceded in death by Eldred L. Osloond (1969), Ellie L. Osloond (1993), C. Ahleen Osloond (2008), Sandra L. Berg (2015), Betty A. Wright (2017), brother, Thomas A. Osloond (2021), sister-in-law, Marcia A. Osloond (2021), and Barbara J. Read (2025).

Surviving direct family members are: Joseph P. (Cyndie) Osloond and Jill Bonney; grandchildren: Marie (Andy) Lincoln, Ben Wright, John (Robin) Gruber, Julie (Dan) Williams, Lysa (Jeremy) McCarrell, Abby Berg, Rachel (Jay) Belfield, Nick Osloond, and Jane Presho; great-grandchildren: Ashleigh (Kenny) Graham, Sam (Lindsey) Gruber, Kathryn Gruber, Alec VanBuskirk, Nick VanBuskirk, Camille VanBuskirk, Mira Belfield, Cameron Belfield, Evan McCarrell, Jettie Presho, and Elliott Hedlund; great-great grandchildren: Lincoln Graham, Layne Graham, and Ember Graham.

Joe was an avid hunter, fisherman, photographer, car enthusiast, and talker. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion. He enjoyed his time participating in the Episcopal Church and later the Catholic Church.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery, 4600 South Yellowstone Hwy. Military Honors will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team and Idaho Honor Guard.
