John Stanley Rail, 79, of Idaho Falls, passed away March 12, 2026, at Promontory Point Rehabilitation. He was under the care of Hospice of Eastern Idaho.
John was born January 28, 1947, in Los Angeles, California, to Ellis Clark Rail and Ruth Eleanor Moor Rail. He grew up and attended schools in Long Beach and graduated from Millikan High School. He ran the school store. He also attended the University of Phoenix where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree. John was drafted as a Field Medic with the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed with his family in Virginia, Germany, Florida, Texas, and at the Pentagon. He provided software and intelligence support for NATO and the military. He was a Chief Warrant Officer II at the time of his retirement.
On June 5, 1971, he married Joan Evans Dallas in Glasglow, Scotland. They were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles Temple. John and Joan eventually made their home in Idaho Falls, Idaho. John worked as an operations manager for a number of software companies. He was also in sales.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As young man, he served as a missionary in Scotland. He loved church music. He served in various church assignments but Ward Chorister was his favorite. He and his wife Joan were called to serve a mission in Jacksonville, Florida, as military liaisons. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He loved BYU football and gathering with family throughout the country at his and Joan’s home. He loved the Savior Jesus Christ. He and Joan were his greatest loves. Their stories were his greatest love stories.
John is survived by his wife, Joan Rail of Idaho Falls, ID; daughter, Karrie (Jeff) Harrison of Livermore, CA; son, Cameron (Summer) Rail of Meridian, ID; son, Andrew (Candice) Rail of Rexburg, ID; daughter, Tamara (Ezra) Friedrich of North Bend, OR; brother, Ellis (Paula) Rail of Rexburg, ID; brother, David (Janet) Rail of Provo, UT; brother, Joe (Laurel) Rail of Midway, UT; brother, Tom (Linda) Rail of Lake Havasu, AZ; sister, Shirley Miller of Lehi, UT; brother, Robert (Marta) Rail of Omaha, NE; and 21 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Marilyn Teague.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at the Cedar Ridge Ward, 3195 S. Holmes Avenue. The family will visit with friends from 11:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the Utah State Veterans Cemetery, 1711 S. Camp Williams Road, Bluffdale, Utah. Military Honors will be performed.
