John Mathews Anderson, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, while wintering with his wife in Texas. He was 72 years old.
Born on January 14, 1953, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Eugene and Yvonne Anderson, John was a man of deep faith and had a tireless work ethic. He spent much of his life working in the agricultural industry. John was known for the way he built lasting relationships with integrity, kindness, and generosity. His dedication to hard work led him to start his own business.
John was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and faithfully served in many callings, including his full-time mission to the Eastern States. His time at BYU-Idaho, where he served as Bishop, was one of his favorite opportunities serving the youth.
He found great joy in the outdoors. Fishing, hunting, and spending time camping were among his favorite pastimes. Above all, his greatest pride and joy was his family. In 1977, John met his wife Jan and they were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on July 22 that year. Together, they had five children.
Summers were filled with countless camping trips and winters were spent exploring Idaho's back country on snowmobile with the family. Jan's recent retirement allowed the two of them to check items off their bucket list.
He is survived by Jan and their five children, JT (Stephanie), James (Amy), Joshua (BriAnne), Jordan (Whitney), and Jena Hodson (Remington); and 21 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene; mother, Yvonne; and two infant grandsons, Tay and Archer.
A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 18, 2025, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2345 West 17th S, Idaho Falls, ID 83402. The family will visit with friends from 9-10 a.m. prior to services at the church. Interment will follow the service at New Sweden Cemetery.
