IDAHO FALLS, ID -- John Richard “Dick” Hinchcliff, 87, of Idaho Falls, died March 29, 2007, at his home, under the care of his loving family and Aspen Home Health & Hospice.
He was born July 16, 1919, in Ogden, Utah, to J. Raymond and Effie Bullock Hinchcliff. He attended Ogden City Schools and graduated from Ogden High School in 1937. He then attended Weber Junior College and received an Associate Degree in 1939. He then attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, Utah, where he received a BS in Civil Engineering in 1943. During his junior year he was commissioned an Ensign in the U. S. Naval Reserve. During the summer of 1942 he received indoctrinal training at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California. Upon graduation from Utah State, he was ordered back into active duty in the Navy. After attending two training schools he was sent overseas, where he served over two years aboard the USS Butternut AN 9 in the western Pacific. He served as Engineer Officer, Navigator, Executive Officer and Commanding Officer. Upon being released to inactive duty at the conclusion of World War II, he married Ruth Goddard of Ogden, Utah, on May 10, 1946, at Ogden. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. He began working for the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation in planning the Weber Basin Project. In 1950 he was recalled to active duty and served two years in Harbor Defense at Fleet Activities in Sasebo, Japan. Upon release to inactive duty he rejoined the Bureau of Reclamation and served as field engineer during the construction of Wanship Dam and Davis Aqueduct, part of the Weber Basin Project. In 1958 he transferred to the Engineering and Construction Division of the Atomic Energy Commission in Idaho Falls, where he served until 1976.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served as a home teacher and held positions in the Sunday School, Elders Quorum, High Priests Group, Stake High Council, and Bishopric. His beloved Ruth died January 21, 1995, in Idaho Falls. He was active in Kiwanis, serving one year as club President and one year as Lieutenant Governor. His hobbies were family history, woodworking, home improvement, photography, and yard work.
Dick’s family meant everything to him and he loved sharing his optimism, his love of life, and a great sense of humor with them. His commitment and dedication to his family, his country, and the gospel of Jesus Christ are a legacy his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will always treasure.

Dear Hinchcliff Family,
I was so sorry to hear through my dad of Brother Hinchcliff's passing. He left a great impression on me as a young man through his example of a happy, diligent home teacher. In fact, I mentioned his wonderful example in a talk I gave recently in our new ward. As a teenager, I wasn't always excited to go out, but he set a standard that I'm still striving to live up to. He also liked to talk about math when he came to visit (my family was one that we home taught), and ironically I ended up in a math-based career. Please accept my condolences, and my sincere wishes for your peace and comfort found in the plan of salvation.
