John Derlin Fretwell, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend and hero, passed away February 4, 2011, in Fresno, California.
John was born July 2, 1917, to William and Lucy Ann Simmons Fretwell, the youngest of five children, in Ucon, Idaho. Dad and his siblings worked hard on the neighboring farms to help support themselves and their widowed mother.
Dad graduated from Ucon High School in1936 and attended one year at Ricks College before being drafted into the United States Army February 17,1941. He served in the Third Division under George Patton in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was part of the Anzio invasion. He was wounded three times and received three Purple Hearts two Bronze and one SilverStar for valor. He was sent to Bushnell Hospital in Brigham City, Utah, to recover, where he danced with Helen Keller.
Dad married his eternal sweetheart, Hazel Larsen, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on August 11, 1949. They lived in Utah while Dad went to Brigham Young University on the G. I. Bill.
Mom and Dad later settled in Fresno, California, where Dad was a Faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served faithfully in many callings. He was an avid genealogist and spent many hours doing family history research.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Rosezella and Mary, and his brothers, William and David. He is survived by his wife, Hazel, his children, Elaine Lewis, John L. Fretwell (Linda), Roger Fretwell (Catherine), Marsha Jentzsch (Steven), and David Fretwell.
Funeral Services were held February 10, 2011, in Fresno, California.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 19, 2011, in the Ucon Cemetery in Ucon, Idaho.
