John Elliott

John Barnett Elliott, 93, of Iona, Idaho, passed away October 23, 2013, at his home of causes incident to age. He was under the care of Teton Home Health & Hospice. John was born March 5, 1920, in Gooding, Idaho, to John B. Elliott and Ethel Venemon Elliott. He grew up and attended schools in Iona and graduated from Iona High School in 1939. He was a member of the Idaho State Class B Champion Basketball Team in 1938 at Iona High (known as the Five Iron Men of Iona), and was selected for the All-State First Team. Following high school he served his country in the U. S. Merchant Marines during World War II. On February 14, 1941, he married Barbara Stephens Elliott in Iona, Idaho. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple August 12, 1958. John and Barbara had four sons, Rod, Stephen, Jack, and Gary. They made their home in Iona, where he worked as a carpenter and building contractor for many years, building homes throughout southeastern Idaho. Barbara passed away October 4, 2013. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, John served as Ward Financial Clerk, Aaronic Priesthood Secretary, and in the Sunday School Presidency. He served on the Iona City Council for 14 years and was a City of Iona Building Inspector. John enjoyed baseball, basketball, and especially loved hunting and fishing with his sons and brothers. John is survived by Son, Rod (Colleen) Elliott of Rigby, ID, Son, Stephen R. (Helen, deceased) Elliott of Iona, ID, Son, Jack (Melody) Elliott of Etna, WY, Son, Gary S. (Larie) Elliott of Sandy, UT, Brother, Wayne (Norma) Elliott of Kuna, ID. 20 grandchildren, 63 great grandchildren, and 9 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Barbara, three brothers, Andy, Gene, and Rodney Elliott, three sisters, Ester Frahm, Pearl Barnes, and Joyce Jemmett, two granddaughters, Diana Lyn and Holly Ann Elliott, a great granddaughter, Lyndsey Diana Elliott, and a daughter-in-law, Helen Elliott. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the Iona LDS Stake Center, 7555 North 55th East, with Bishop Hal Schofield of the Iona 2nd Ward officiating. The family will visit with friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 South Ammon Road, and from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Iona Cemetery. Military Rites will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team and Idaho Honor Guard.
