Joan C. Brinkmann Isom, 93, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026. She was the second child of Norbert J. Brinkmann and Catherine M. Brinkmann.
Joan was born on a farm in the Blackfoot area. At the age of four, she moved with her family to a farm west of Idaho Falls, and she later made Oakland Valley her lifelong home, where she spent the remainder of her adult years.
As a child, Joan and her siblings rode the train each week to Blackfoot to attend St. Margaret’s Catholic Grade School. She completed seventh and eighth grade at Holy Rosary School in Idaho Falls and went on to graduate from Mt. Angel Academy in Mt. Angel, Oregon. After high school, Joan worked briefly in the laboratory at Sacred Heart Hospital in Idaho Falls.
On May 28, 1952, Joan married A. Dean Isom. They shared 57 years of marriage, building life grounded in faith and family.
Joan was a devout member of Christ the King Catholic Parish in Idaho Falls and held a deep love for her country. Family was the center of her life, and she found immense joy in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During the growing season, she could often be found tending her extensive flowerbeds and garden--work she loved and took great pride in. Joan truly enjoyed people and was known for her kindness, courtesy, selflessness, and generosity.
She is survived by her children, Julie Isom of Idaho Falls, Ralph (Paula) Isom of Idaho Falls, Joyce Shoemaker of Blackfoot, Marie Aschliman of South Jordan, UT, Matt (Lori) Isom of Idaho Falls, and Sue Isom of Bluffdale, UT. She is also survived by her siblings, Leo Brinkmann of Aumsville, OR, MaryBeth (Bob) Romeo of San Antonio, TX, Frances Leighty of Millcreek, UT, George Brinkmann of Rathdrum, ID, and Kathleen Dohse of Pocatello, ID; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, two sisters, and four brothers.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Gables Assisted Living and Symbii Hospice for their care and kindness.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at Christ the King, 1690 E. 17th Street. A recitation of the Rosary will take place prior at 9:30 a.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge Avenue, with a visitation to follow until 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in New Sweden Cemetery.
