JO MCATEE
IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO: Wanda Joyce “Jo” (Houston) McAtee, 71, of Idaho Falls died March 7, 2003 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
She was born December 27, 1931 in Trego County, Kansas to Leona Houston Walden and Respy Houston. Jo was raised by her grandparents, Henry and Emma Staatz in Kansas, attending schools in the area. At the age of 14, she moved to a nearby town to attend high school. She lived on her own and supported herself until she met and fell in love with Richard McAtee. They were married January 20, 1952.
Dick and Jo moved to Moscow Idaho in 1962 so Dick could attend graduate school. In May of 1964, Dick and Jo moved their family to Idaho Falls where they continued to reside until the present. Dick worked at the INEEL while Jo raised their family.
Jo was an active lifetime member of Silver Sage Girl Scout Council where she served in many positions including a leader, Master trainer and association delegate. She was a Thanks Badge and Thanks badge 2 recipient. In addition, she volunteered with many organizations over the years including teaching Sunday school, the Community Food Bank, Friends of the Library and the Idaho Falls Figure Skating club. She was a reading tutor at Edgemont Elementary through the RSVP program. Her life was one of giving and sacrifice in order to help others. She touched many lives with her love, care and understanding and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Richard, of Idaho Falls, 3 daughters (Peggy Fitch of Gladstone MO, Diana Potter of Pocatello ID, and Nancy McAtee of Fairfax, VA), 3 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 2 sisters and a brother. She was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Pamela and her parents.
A memorial service will take place Thursday, March 13th at 11:00 am at Woods Funeral Home (273 N. Ridge Ave.) with Reverend Bruce Henne, of St. Luke Episcopal Church, officiating. The family will meet with friends on Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home (273 N. Ridge Ave.) and for one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow at a later date in Kansas.
