James Henry Southwick was born March 9, 1935, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Glen Southwick and Gladys Porter Southwick. He passed away on Monday, February 20, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family. Jim attended schools in Ammon and graduated from the new Bonneville High School in 1953. He furthered his education at Idaho State College in Pocatello, Idaho, where he was on the swim team, competed at the Northwest Swimming Competition and received several medals. He went on to University of Idaho, and later received his Masters Degree from Brigham Young University. He met Reula Mickelsen and they married on October 26, 1955. Jim served in the Army at Fort Bliss, Texas, and attained the rank of Captain. He worked at the INEL for 35 years under various contractors as Chemist, Health Physicist and Safety Engineer. Jim served in many capacities in the LDS church as well as in the community of Ammon. He was an Eagle Scout and a Seminary graduate. He served as Webelos Leader and Scoutmaster and enjoyed working with the youth. He later served a mission at the Idaho Falls LDS Temple Visitors Center. He was the Assistant Fire Chief at the Ammon Volunteer Fire Department, an Ammon City Councilman, and served on the Bonneville County and City of Ammon Planning and Zoning Boards. He enjoyed hunting and exploring the great outdoors, tending his apple orchard and being a father. The most important things in Jim’s life were his family, his country, his community and his faith. He is survived by his wife, Reula Mickelsen Southwick; his brother, Glen Ervin (Julia) Southwick; his children, Susan (Vince) Bodily, Pamela (Marc) Kelly, James L. (Carolyn) Southwick, Michael G. (Cindy) Southwick, and Eric W. (Kimberli) Southwick; 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Gladys Southwick. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 24, 2017, at the Ammon LDS 8th Ward, 2055 S. Ammon Road, with Bishop Marshall Riggs officiating. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road, and Friday 12-12:45 p.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Ammon Cemetery.
