Jay Vaughn Lake, 83, of Pacific Palisades, California, formerly of Idaho Falls, passed away September 7, 2015, at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital.
Jay was born September 9, 1931, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Jeptha Minor Lake and Anna Marie Oswald Lake. He grew up and attended schools in Idaho Falls and graduated from Idaho Falls High School. Jay's father, part of a longtime Idaho Falls family, operated J. Minor Lake Cement Contracting Company. His mother worked for thirty-two years at The First Security Bank, and was an accomplished pianist and piano teacher. Following high school Jay served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Switzerland-Germany-Austria Mission.
Jay attended Brigham Young University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business, the University of Southern California, where he earned his master's degree in accounting, and the University of California - Los Angeles, where he earned his Juris Doctor.
On September 3, 1960, he married Sandra Jean Taylor in Westwood, California. Their marriage was solemnized in the Los Angeles LDS Temple. Jay and Sandra made their home in Westwood, California, then moved to Pacific Palisades in 1969. Jay specialized in tax law and worked as a partner in a law firm in Westwood before becoming a senior attorney for Southern California Gas Company and, later, Western Airlines. He opened a private practice in Pacific Palisades in 1985.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in various capacities as a member of the Pacific Palisades Ward, including many years in the Ward Bishopric and as Ward Clerk. He was also active in scouting. He served in several positions with, and as President of the Westwood, California, Chamber of Commerce. Jay enjoyed writing, especially poetry. He was an avid photographer, skier, and reader. He loved learning, traveling the world, and his memories of Idaho Falls. He was very musical, loved listening to classical music, and played the trumpet, ukulele-banjo, harmonica and piano. He had a fondness for art and was a talented painter. A big fan of Los Angeles Dodgers baseball, he also followed basketball and the Los Angeles Lakers. With his sister, Joy Anne, he devoted many happy hours to family history work.
Jay is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sandra Lake, their five children - Lori Lake Berrett, Jay Steven Lake, Kristi Lake, Robert Lake and Shelli-Jean Lake - and his four grand-children: Kelsey Welch, Bradley Berrett, Grace Berrett and Hero Major. He is also survived by his sister, Joy Anne Black. He was preceded in death by his parents.
