Jay Herring's life - If You Know, You Know (#IYKYK). Jay Norvin Herring, 92, of Draper, Utah, passed away surrounded by his loved ones on the evening of July 6, 2025, in Draper, Utah. He was active and engaged in life and it's many adventures until the very end.
Jay was born on June 5, 1933, in Price, Utah, to Andrew Litster Herring and Ellen Leanerva Boren. He was raised in Wellington, Utah. He attended and graduated from Carbon High School and Carbon College in Price, Utah. He then went to Utah State University where he played football and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering.
On February 17, 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Carlene Pace. They had 62 wonderful years together. They moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where they raised their family. Jay worked as a civil engineer until he found his passion building homes and cabins. He loved being a builder. Carlene passed away on June 9, 2016.
Jay moved to Draper, Utah, where he met and married Yvonne Tollefsen Oakeson on July 8, 2017. They had eight years of happiness, joy, and companionship. They made many memories together.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jay enjoyed skiing, travelling, cruises, attending sporting events and spending time with his family. The family, and Jay in particular, loved spending time at their cabin in Island Park, Idaho.
Jay is survived by his son, Jeff (Deanna) Herring of Draper, UT; daughter, Jodi (JR) Schouten of Spanish Fork, UT; and wife, Yvonne Oakeson of Draper, UT; 18 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren with his wife, Carlene. He also had an immense impact on his numerous nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly. As a bonus, he got six more children and 10 more grandchildren when he married Yvonne.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carlene; parents; daughter, Jaylene (Evan) Johnson; sisters, Belva Asay and Vila Hull; and brother, Dallas Herring.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 South Ammon Road. Services will be broadcast live on this page. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 6:30-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Both visitations will be at Wood East Side. Burial will be in the Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery.
Jay was a legend in life and will be missed immeasurably by all who knew him. However, the reunions occurring in heaven right now are exuberant. We love Jay.
