Jay Elray Bateman, 64, of Idaho Falls, passed away on February 19, 2025, after a short illness, at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah.
Jay was born October 26, 1960, in Afton, Wyoming, to Dennis Mack Bateman and Wylene Ivie Bateman. He grew up and attended schools in Idaho and graduated from Bonneville High School. He also attended Ricks College where he met his sweetheart.
On July 19, 1984, he married Lisa Peterson in the Idaho Falls Temple. Jay and Lisa made their home in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where they enjoyed raising their family. Jay worked as a hydrologist for USGS.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the Louisville, Kentucky Mission. He enjoyed serving in the Scouting program, the bishopric at BYU–I, and many other callings. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, and anything outdoors! He was also a scientist who loved learning and researching. He loved all the small things, and loved his family dearly.
Jay is survived by his wife, Lisa Bateman of Idaho Falls, ID; mother, Wylene Bateman of Iona, ID; daughter, Melissa (Spencer) Chiu of Rigby, ID; son, Jacob (Kelsey) Bateman of Rigby, ID; son, Benjamin (Kayla) Bateman of Rexburg, ID; daughter, EmmaLee (Nathan) Burnett of Idaho Falls, ID; sister, Debbie (Jeff) Wheeler of Idaho Falls, ID; brother, Curtis (Rone) Bateman of Iona, ID; grandmother, Leah Bitton of Iona, ID; grandchildren, Sullivan, Jaylee, Jayce, Elias, Hans, Matthew, Aaron, and Lydia.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dennis Bateman; brother, Jed Bateman; sister-in-law, Lisa Bateman; and nephew, Tyrel Bateman.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2025, at the Ucon Stake Center, 2967 East 105 North, with Brother Darrin Peterson officiating. The family will visit with friends Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 South Ammon Road, and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Iona Cemetery.
