Janiel Phillips, a loving mother and wife, died at her home on May 2, 2018. Her three daughters were at her bedside. She was 88.
Janiel was born on March 9, 1930, in Malad, Idaho, to Royal Oscar Swenson and Tressa Bailey Swenson. She was baptized as a member of the LDS Church on May 1, 1938. Her brother, Jay Swenson lives in Boise, Idaho, and her sister, Twilla Halbum lives in Pennsylvania. Janiel's older brother, Dean Swenson, died in 2006. Her younger brother, Doyle Swenson, passed away in 2015.
Janiel graduated from Malad High School and later took courses at Idaho State College. In 1948, Janiel married Don Phillips of Downey, Idaho. Janiel was sealed to Don in 2015, in the Portland, Oregon, LDS Temple.
During their first few years of marriage, Janiel and Don lived in Idaho Falls. In 1953, they moved to Ammon, Idaho, where they spent the remainder of their lives. Janiel loved her home, and it was a special place for family members to visit, eat meals, pick raspberries, and spend time with Don and Janiel.
She was never one to sit still. Janiel was a charter member of the Ladies Carpentry Auxiliary, served in numerous positions in the her Ammon LDS Ward, and managed the ladies fashion section of Sears Department store in Idaho Falls. Don and Janiel enjoyed playing golf, gardening, and watching their grandchildren play sports.
On January 8, 2014, her husband Don passed away. For the next several days Janiel was surrounded by her daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, in-laws, and siblings. She wrote in her diary on January 9, 2014: "I love my family."
Janiel is survived by her three daughters- Kathy (Ken) Top, Marilyn (Norman) Harker, and Joyce (Chad) Byington, her sister and brother, 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2018, at the Ammon LDS 6th Ward Chapel, 2150 Avocet Drive. The family will have a viewing from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on Sunday at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road, and Monday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church. Janiel will be buried next to her husband Don at the Ammon Cemetery.
