Janet McLachlan Smith, 85, returned to her heavenly family Sunday, June 15, 2014, at her home in Idaho Falls, with her children by her side. She was under the excellent care of Hands of Hope Hospice.
Janet was born July 6, 1928, in Taylorsville, Utah, to John Lloyd McLachlan and Janet Isabelle West McLachlan. She was welcomed into their home by seven brothers and one sister. Janet grew up on a farm, feeding turkeys, riding Morgan horses, and planting row upon row of tomatoes. She learned to play baseball, basketball, and even to box with her active brothers. She graduated from Salt Lake City's Granite High School in 1946. She went to work at Z.C.M.I. as a secretary. Soon, she was asked to model the latest fashions at Z.C.M.I. and other Salt Lake City department stores’ fashion shows; this she enjoyed immensely. She continued to model at yearly fashion shows until her move to Idaho.
In December, 1946, she went on a blind date with Keith H. Smith, and they were married September 12, 1947, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. She said it was hard to resist his long eyelashes and robin-egg blue Ford convertible. They made their home in Lehi, Utah, until 1971, when they moved to Idaho Falls, where they lived the remainder of their lives. Keith passed away September 19, 2010.
Janet was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served for over twenty years in the Primary, serving as president, counselor, and Blazer Scout teacher. She also served in the Relief Society and Sunday School, mostly as a teacher, at which she excelled. She loved literature (especially poetry), history, and music. Her home was filled with good books and all genres of music. She enjoyed working in her flower gardens, watching the birds, bunnies, and butterflies in her yard, and generally being active in the outdoors. She was a devoted wife, dedicated mother of six, and an indulgent grandmother who thought her posterity deserved lots of candy. Most importantly, she leaves her descendants with a legacy of courage, faith, and love.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 63 years, Keith H. Smith, nine siblings, and one daughter, Margaret. She is survived by her children: Keith L. (Kathleen) Smith, Marvin M. (Janet) Smith, Mack W. (Teri) Smith, Janet (Kevin) Barton, and Robert K. (Shelly) Smith; 25 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.
