James “J.D.” Darwin Barnes, 89, of Idaho Falls, passed away December 4, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
J.D. was born April 22, 1934, in Milo, Idaho, to William James Barnes and Mabel Palmer Barnes. He grew up and attended schools in Idaho Falls and graduated from Idaho Falls High School. He also attended Utah State.
On August 6, 1954, he married Lucille Warner in the Idaho Falls Temple. J.D. and Lucille made their home in Idaho Falls where he worked in the auto repair industry and owned Barnes Service. Soon after marrying, J.D. was drafted and served honorably in the United States Army, spending two years in Germany.
J.D. was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed the outdoors, spending his time fly fishing, skiing, and hunting. He also loved sports and spending time with his grandchildren.
J.D. is survived by his son, Jim (Pam) Barnes of Rigby, ID; daughter, Christine (Garth) Babcock of Cheney, WA; daughter, Melanie Ames (Javier) Gonzales of Idaho Falls, ID; 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; daughter, Cheryl Prestidge; sisters, Lucy and Barbara; and brothers, Deloy, Keith, and Verdell.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at the Taylor Crossing Ward, 2040 Brentwood Drive, with Bishop Robert Sant officiating. The family will visit with friends Monday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 273 North Ridge Avenue, and Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to services. Burial will be in the Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery. Military Honors will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team and Idaho Honor Guard.
